Q. 1. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of two links AB and DC connected to a vertical bar BC. Each of the links’
AB and BC weigh 15 N. The spring HF is always horizontal and in contact with bar BC. The system is in
equilibrium when 𝜃 = 30𝑜 . The spring has stiffness of 2kN/m and is uncompressed when 𝜃 = 0°. Find the
weight (in Newtons) of the bar BC. You must solve the problem using potential energy method to get
marks. You need not check for stability (5 Marks)
Q. 2. The hoist shown in Figure 2 is used to lift cars in a garage. For the given position of the hoist legs at 𝜃 =
45𝑜 , the system is in equilibrium under the action of the vehicle weight 15 kN and the force P exerted by
the hydraulic cylinder. The point G indicates the centre of gravity of the vehicle. Neglecting the weight of
the hoist, find the value of the force P exerted by the hydraulic cylinder. You must solve the problem
using principle of virtual work to get marks. (6 Marks)
Q. 3. For the given position of the mechanism shown in Figure 3, the spring with stiffness k = 900 N/m is stretched
by 60 mm. Find the minimum force P that is required to initiate rotation about the hinge axis BC. Also
determine the magnitudes of the reaction forces at B and C, which are bearings without axial thrust
resistance. Neglect any moment reactions at these bearings. (5 Marks)
Q. 4. Figure 4 shows two concrete blocks, each weighing 2200 N used as a wall in a swimming pool. The blocks
are 1 m wide (into the plane of the paper) and are simply resting under its self-weight. Will the blocks be in
equilibrium when the pool is filled with water to the top? The coefficients of friction at different surfaces
are shown. Assume unit weight of water, γ = 10 kN/m3. (7 Marks)

Q. 5. The truss in Figure 5 is used at NASA to prepare a rocket for firing. For the shown position, the truss is
lifting a 600 kN section of the rocket at point A. This load induces a compressive force of 50 kN in member
AB, and a tensile force of 120kN in member CD. Calculate the forces in members BF and EF. (6 Marks)
Q. 6. Figure 6 shows a device where all dimensions are in cm. The device can support a 40 N load and can be set
at different heights by resetting the pawl C in another tooth on the fixed vertical column D. Find the
horizontal distance b where the load should be applied on the device such that the two rollers A and B of
the device support equal forces. The weight of the device is negligible. (6 Marks)
Q. 7. Figure 7 shows an arrangement where a cable wraps around two cylindrical surfaces, and is connected to a
spring at one end and pulled by a force P at the other. The cable segments BC, DE, and GH are horizontal.
The spring stiffness is 2 N/mm and is unstretched when P=0. All the contact surfaces have coefficients of
static and kinetic friction of 0.1 and 0.09 respectively.
(a) Determine the value of P needed to stretch the spring by 4 mm. (3 marks)
(b) Once the spring is stretched by 4 mm, determine the value of P so that the spring begins to contract.
