What I Need to Know
Hello dear learner. Welcome to this module on collecting data on one
variable, organizing and presenting data in tables and bar graphs.
This module is designed to equip you, learners, with essential knowledge,
skills, and attitude on collecting data on one variable, organizing and presenting
data in tables and bar graphs.
This module is designed so you can pace yourself as you use them to
achieve the prescribed learning competencies. It also aims to prepare you to be
at the forefront of the fast-growing world of industry, quest for higher education
and useful in your daily living.
We hope this material will be of great help to you!

below. What is the biggest area?

2. Four squares form the figure below. The area of the

smallest square is 25 cm2. What is the area of the biggest
square?

What’s New
In this lesson, you will learn how to collects data in one variable, sorts,
classifies and organizes data in tabular form and presents this into a vertical or
horizontal bar graph.

4
What is It

Lesson1: Collecting Data on One Variable

The table helps us organize data. Collecting data is the process of
gathering, measuring and analyzing facts and other information about the
topic. Tally marks are used as counters. Organized data can be useful because
it makes reading and interpreting the data easier.

Teacher Amy administered an Achievement test in Math in her

class. The scores are shown below.

15 17 20 16 19 18 17 15 17 20
17 18 18 18 20 18 20 19 19 19
Look at the scores in the box.
Can you easily tell how many pupils got 15? Why?
What do numbers inside the box represent?
Do you have an idea how to organize the given information?

Write and arrange the scores from highest to lowest as shown in the table
below. Tally the number of pupils who got the following scores e.g. 20, 19,
etc. in the table by marking (l) in the tally column. Do this till the last score
has been tallied.
Count the number of pupils who got 20, 19 and so on and write the total in
the total column.

Now, looking at the table can you easily see the number of pupils who
got 20?
What is the highest score?
What is the lowest score?
Which score has the most number of pupils who got it?
How many pupils took the test?

Lesson 2: Organizing and Presenting Data

in Tables and Bar Graphs

A table and a bar graph are display of data. A Bar graph show
information and compare data. The graph has parts known as the title, and
labels. The bar graph can be presented in vertical or horizontal form to
make it easier to read and interpret the data.
Teacher Mona conducted an interview among
her pupils about their favorite sports. She asked
her pupils to write their favorite sports.

Do you have any idea about the sports listed by her pupils?
Let us find out.

TOTAL 40

1. Which sports is the most preferred by the pupils to play?

2. Which sports is the least preferred by the pupils?
3. How many pupils were interviewed?
4. How is the data presented?

6
5. How can these data be represented in graph form?
6. Do you know how to make a bar graph?

Here are the steps to follow in making and presenting the data or
information in a bar graph.
1. Make a horizontal and vertical lines or axis.
2. Write the appropriate labels in the horizontal and vertical
axis.
3. Make the appropriate scale in the vertical axis. Write the
different categories in the horizontal axis. You can make
or use any interval, by1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
4. Draw the bar for each category based on the given data.
5. Write a good title for the bar graph. Write the title in its
proper place.
6. Interpret the data.

Here is an example of a vertical bar graph.

1. What is the graph about?
2. What are the categories in this graph?

3. What intervals are used?

7
There is another way in presenting the data. It can also be
presented using horizontal bar graph.

What I have Learned
1. We organize the information or data using tables and
graphs so that it will be easier to see, analyze and interpret.
2. A bar graph or a bar chart is used to represent data using
rectangular bars of different heights and different lengths. The graph is
represented either horizontally or vertically. Mainly the bar graph is used
to show or compare the changes in something over the time.
3. Steps in Making Bar graph.
Step1: Collect your Data.
Step2:Draw an x and a y-axis.
Step3:Label the x-axis.
Step4:Label the y-axis
Step5:Draw your bars.
Step 6: Interpret the data.

What I Can Do

Vegetable Fest!
Harvest season has begun, and the farmers are busily picking their
vegetables. Help the farmers record how many vegetables they picked.
First, count how many of each type of vegetables and mark it in the
table. Count and write it in number form. Use the information provided
to answer the questions. Finally, make a vertical bar graph.
