CHAPTER 1
The Problem and it's Settings
Background of the Study

Time management is the process of scheduling and planning how

much time you spend on various tasks in order to increase productivity and

more effectively accomplish your objectives. It entails ranking the most crucial

tasks in order of importance, assigning time to each activity, and employing

time management strategies and tools to efficiently manage time, (Sridhar

and Srinivasan, 2015).

In Malaysia, a study by Yusof and Ismail (2018) identified time

management as one of the major challenges faced by grade 12 students in

their work immersion performance. The study found that students often

struggle to manage their time effectively due to a lack of awareness of the

importance of work immersion and inadequate guidance from their teachers.

This leads to incomplete or unsatisfactory work immersion outputs, which can

impact their future career prospects. The authors recommended that schools

provide more guidance and support to students in developing their time

management skills. Additionally, in Thailand, a study by Nantaporn et al.

(2019) found that grade 12 students struggle with time management when it

comes to their work immersion performance. The study revealed that students

often fail to prioritize their immersion activities and struggle to balance their

academic workload and immersion requirements. This lack of effective time

management skills can lead to inadequate preparation for their future careers

and poor performance during their work immersion.

In Philippines, Raclano (2020) revealed that although the goal of work

immersion programs is to give students real-world experiences, the lack of

2
organized instruction on useful skills like time management can negatively

impact students' effectiveness in the workplace.

A significant issue concerning the performance of grade 12 students in

the Davao region during their work immersion is their inability to manage their

time effectively. This leads to incomplete or poor output immersion outcomes,

which may harm their chances of landing a good job in the future. The study

emphasizes how important it is for educators to help students in improving

time management skills by offering greater direction and assistance. The

report also recommends that schools set up a method for tracking and

assessing students' progress and give students additional time to work on

their immersion assignments, (Ravanera, 2019).

The usefulness of bread and pastry time management for both

academic achievement and job immersion has not received much attention in

the literature. Although studies on the value of time management abilities and

their effects on academic success exist, there is a lack of particular research

on the subject as it relates to the bread and pastry sector. This research gap

emphasizes the need for additional study to determine how time management

abilities affect academic achievement and work immersion in the bread and

pastry business. Additionally, The importance of this research comes from the

fact that time management abilities are critical in the bread and pastry sector,

as production time is an essential component. Poor time management can

have a detrimental effect on work immersion experiences as well as academic

results by causing delays, poor productivity, and poor output. Furthermore, it

is critical to comprehend how time management abilities can improve

academic achievement and work immersion experiences, given the growing

3
need for trained labor in the bread and pastry business. This study is crucial

because it sheds light on how time management abilities affect both academic

achievement and work immersion in the bread and pastry sector.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the level time management of grade 12 students towards work

immersion performance.

1.1. Number of hours spent in work immersion in terms of attendance.

1.2. Number of hours spent in work immersion in terms of output.

2. Is there a relationship between the number of hours spent in work

immersion in terms of attendance and output.

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the number of hours spent

in work immersion in terms of attendance and output.

Theoretical Framework

Goal Setting Theory is mainly anchored to Locke and Latham's (1990)

, establishing clear, difficult goals raises motivation and performance levels.

According to this theory, students can be motivated to manage their time

more efficiently by creating clear and specific goals for work immersion

assignments, which in turn will help them perform better during their work

immersion. This theory applies to grade 12 students' time management

efficacy.

Self-Determination Theory by Deci and Ryan (1985) is the theory that

supports the Goal Setting Theory states that people are more driven and

involved in their efforts when they have independence, skills, and relatedness.

4
Within the framework of grade 12 students' time management effectiveness in

relation to work immersion performance, this theory posits that students who

perceive themselves as competent and autonomous time managers for work

immersion assignments are more likely to be driven to accomplish their

objectives. Furthermore, during job immersion, students who have strong

connections with their teachers and mentors may experience a stronger

sense of relatedness, which might inspire them to better manage their time.

Additionally, according to Bandura's (1977) Social Cognitive Theory,

people pick up new behaviors through imitation, reinforcement, and

observation. According to this theory, students can pick up effective time

management techniques by seeing and copying the actions of successful

people, such as their instructors or mentors, when it comes to the

effectiveness of time management in relation to work immersion performance

for grade 12 students. Furthermore, students can be encouraged to keep

growing and improving their time management skills by receiving positive

reinforcement for their own efficient time management practices.

6
Scope and Delimitation

The purpose of this study is to determine how effectively bread and

pastry students manage their time in relation to both their academic and job

immersion. The study will concentrate on defining time management,

highlighting its significance in the bread and pastry industry, investigating the

effects of efficient time management on students' general performance, and

analyzing the variables influencing their time management abilities. The study

is limited, though, in that it only looks at academic achievement as determined

by grades and attendance records, it only focuses on students who study

bread and pastry in a particular culinary school, and it uses a quantitative

research approach. However, the results could help improve the time

management abilities of students studying bread and pastry as well as their

performance in the work immersion program and academics, which would be

advantageous to both learners and the culinary schools.

Significance of the Study

This study focuses on the effectiveness of time management of bread

and pastry students towards work immersion and academic performances.

The result of this study will be valuable to the following:

Educational Institutions. By using the study's findings, educational

institutions can develop and execute effective time management curriculum

for 12th grade students. The study can help academic institutions identify the

factors that contribute to students' poor time management skills and develop

targeted interventions to address these issues.

Immersion teachers. By providing guidance and support, immersion

teachers can use the study's findings to help students become more adept at

7
managing their time. The study can help teachers understand the challenges

that students have when trying to manage their time well and provide

strategies to help them overcome these challenges.

Students. By improving their understanding of the importance of time

management for their future careers, the study can benefit students. Students

can improve their work immersion performance and prepare for their future

careers by learning efficient time management skills through this course.

Future Researcher. By providing a framework for further research into

the influence of time management skills on job immersion performance, the

study may prove beneficial to researchers in the future. The study might

identify areas that require further research and provide a framework for future

studies on the topic.

Definition of Terms

Time Management. It involves making thoughtful choices about how

best to use the little amount of time at hand to complete tasks and reach

goals. To maximize productivity, it entails appreciating the significance of

tasks, approximating the amount of time needed for each activity, and

methodically planning and arranging one's timetable. Additionally, it describes

the particular methods, approaches, and resources used to efficiently

organize, set priorities, and manage one's time. To-do lists, deadlines,

timetables, time tracking, work delegation, avoiding distractions, and self-

discipline are a few examples of how to do this.

Work Immersion. It is a sort of experiential learning that students take

part in practical, real-world job experiences that are connected to their

academic subject. Students can expand their professional networks, acquire

8
industry-specific information, and improve practical skills through this. To

assist students in making the change into the workforce, it is frequently used

in vocational education and training programs (Kwan,2018). Additionally, it is

an educational program which gives students the chance to work in actual

workplace environments where they may put the knowledge and abilities they

have learned in the classroom to utilize. Partnerships between academic

institutions and business partners are common in work immersion programs,

which give students hands-on experience in the workplace that is relevant to

their course of study. It can be used to prepare students for entry-level work in

their chosen sector and may operate anywhere from a few weeks to several

months (Department of Education, 2016).
