Class &Div.: X (ALL DIVISIONS) Subject: PHYSICS
Lesson / Topic: LIGHT – Reflection and Refraction
****************************************************************************************

a) plane mirrors only
b) concave mirrors only
c) convex mirrors only
d) all reflecting surfaces
2. Consider the following properties of virtual images:
(A) cannot be projected on the screen
(B) are formed by both concave and convex lens
(C) are always erect
(D) are always inverted
The correct properties are:
a) (A) and (D)
b) (A) and (B)
c) (A), (B) and (C)
d) (A), (B) and (D)
3. A student used a device (X) to obtain/ focus the image of a well illuminated distant building on a
screen (S) as shown below in the diagram. Select the correct statement about the device (X).

a) This device is a concave lens of focal length 8 cm.

b) This device is a convex mirror of focal length 8 cm.
c) This device is a convex lens of focal length 4 cm.
d) This device is a convex lens of focal length 8 cm.
4. Select from the following the best experimental set-up for tracing the path of a ray of light
passing through a rectangular glass slab:

a) P
b) Q
c) R
d) S
5. A student traces the path of a ray of light through a rectangular glass slab for the different values
of angle of incidence. He observes all possible precautions at each step of the experiment. At the
end of the experiment, on analyzing the measurements, which of the following conclusions is he
likely to draw?
a) ∠i = ∠e < ∠r
b) ∠i < ∠e < ∠r
c) ∠i > ∠e < ∠r
d) ∠i = ∠e > ∠r
6. In optics an object which has higher refractive index is called
a) Optically rarer
b) Optically denser
c) Optical density
d) Refractive index

In the following questions, a statement of assertion is followed by a statement of reason. Mark the
correct choice as:

(a) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

(b) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

(c) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

(d) If Assertion is false but Reason is true.

7. Assertion (A): A ray passing through the centre of curvature of a concave mirror after reflection,
is reflected back along the same path.
Reason (R): The incident rays fall on the mirror along the normal to the reflecting surface.
8. Assertion(A): The mirrors used in search lights are concave spherical.
Reason (R): In concave spherical mirror the image formed is always virtual.

9. Assertion (A): The value of F in a concave mirror is taken as negative and in a convex mirror is
taken as positive.
Reason(R). All distances measured to the right of the origin are taken as positive and those
measured along the left of the origin are taken as negative.
10. Assertion(A): Greater is the refractive index of a medium or denser the medium, lesser is the
velocity of light in that
Reason(R): Refractive index is inversely proportional to velocity.

SECTION – II (Short Answer Type I)

11. State two positions in which a concave mirror produces a magnified image of a given object. List
two differences between the two images.
12. An object is placed at a distance of 30 cm in front of a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm. Write
four characteristics of the image formed by the mirror.
13. What is minimum number of rays required for locating the image formed by a concave mirror for
an object? Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of a virtual image by a concave mirror.
14. The refractive indices of glass and water with respect to air are 3/2 and 4/3 respectively. If speed
of light in glass is m/s, find the speed of light in water.
15. ‘‘The magnification produced by a spherical mirror is – 3.’’ List four information you obtain from
this statement about the mirror/image.

SECTION – III (Short Answer Type II)

16. (a) State Snell’s law of refraction of light.

(b) When a ray of light travelling in air enters obliquely into a glass slab, it is observed that the
light ray emerges parallel to the incident ray but it is shifted sideways slightly. Draw a labelled ray
diagram to illustrate it.
17. A 10 cm tall object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a convex lens of focal length 12
cm. The distance of the object from the lens is 18 cm. Find the nature, position and size of the
image formed.
18. The image of an object formed by a mirror is real, inverted and is of magnification (– 1). If the
image is at a distance of 40 cm from the mirror, where is the object placed? Where would the
image be if the object is moved 20 cm towards the mirror? State reason and also draw ray
diagram for the new position of the object to justify your answer.
19. (a) Define power of a lens and write its SI unit.
(b) A convex lens forms a real and inverted image of a needle at a distance of 50 cm from it.
Where is the needle placed in front of the lens, if image size is equal to the object size? Also, find
the power of the lens.
20. To construct ray diagrams, two rays of light are generally so chosen that it is easy to determine
their directions after reflection from a mirror. Choose two such rays and state the path/direction
of these rays after reflection from a concave mirror. Use these two rays to find the position and
nature of the image of an object placed at a distance of 8 cm from a concave mirror of focal
length 12 cm.
