Structure of WH Questions. We can make wh-questions in two ways:

1) With a helping verb (do/be)


Structure 1: Wh-word + Helping verb + Subject + Main verb + …?
Examples:
a. What do you do in the morning?
b. How often does she do the ironing?
c. Where is your cottage located?

Practice: make questions for these answers.


1. Thomas is going to the mall. 6. My parents are sleeping now.
2. Susan studies English. 7. This bus goes to the shopping mall.
3. Her brother always gets up at 6 o’clock. 8. I take the garbage out in the morning.
4. Mr. Brown goes to work by bus. 9. My friends watch their favorite show every day.
5. I study English because I like it. 10. The children are making a snowman.

2) With the main verb


Structure 2: Wh-word + Main verb + …?
Examples:
1. What is there on the table?
2. Who is your friend?
3. Whose car is this?

Practice: make questions for these answers.


1. There are 6 rooms in the living room. 6. Tom is absent.
2. Reading and dancing are my favorite activities. 7. The cat is under the table.
3. Anna’s birthday is tomorrow. 8. My brother is running fast
4. The living room is upstairs. 9. There is a big sofa in the living room.
5. This car is broken. 10. It is 7:30.

As we use wh-questions to ask for information about people, things, places, etc., we cannot answer them with “Yes”
or “No.” We are expected to provide specific information in response to wh-questions.
