Wire Ways

Wireways are designed to protect

cables from environmental
contaminants such as dust, dirt, oil,
and moisture. Wireways—
sometimes known as "troughs" or
"gutters" within the electrical
contracting field—are commonly
used to control wiring in
environments where contaminants
may cause problems. Depending on
the product type, they can be mounted to walls or ceilings, secured under
flooring, or laid out in a hybrid design in unique cable management
systems.

A wireway is typically produced as a metallic or non-metallic trough with

hinged or removable covers, so that the cables contained are well-protected
but still accessible. The high cost of manufacturing and installing wireways
limits their use to small sections of cable management systems, while most
systems primarily consist of cable trays, conduit, and other types of
raceway. When connected, wireways must be reinforced using special
fittings and gaskets between sections.

The layout of a cable management system, consisting of various connected

wireway shapes, is shown below.

3
Busways and Wireways
Busways and wireways are forms of wiring
raceways consisting of sheet-metal troughs
with removable covers. A busway contains a
single circuit usually of large capacity; in
some cases, arranged for tapping off at
convenient intervals and in other cases,
untapped between two points. A wireway is a
duct or channel which may contain any
number of conductors whose sum of cross-
sectional areas does not exceed 20 percent
of the interior cross-sectional area of the
duct or channel.
Busways and wireways shall be installed only for exposed work. Where used
outdoors or in wet locations, they shall be of approved construction, for
example raintight or watertight. Busways and wireways shall not be
installed where they may be subject to severe physical damage or corrosive
vapors.

Wireways are produced in three different forms, as shown in the table

below.

4
Standards and Applications
Because they are frequently used in hazardous environments, the use of
wireways is governed by several important standards and approval ratings.
These ratings help determine a wireway's appropriateness for a specific
application or environment.

Wireway Size (inches) Maximum Cable Size

2.5 x 2.5 AWG 2

3x3 AWG 1

4x4 AWG 4/0

4x6 AWG 4/0

Cable Tray

In the electrical wiring of buildings,

a cable tray system is used to
support insulated electrical
cables used for power distribution,
control, and communication. Cable
trays are used as an alternative to
open wiring or electrical
conduit systems, and are commonly
used for cable management in
commercial and industrial
construction. They are especially
useful in situations where changes to a wiring system are anticipated, since
new cables can be installed by laying them in the tray, instead of pulling
them through a pipe.
Prohibitions
 Cable installations in trays may be used for exposed work, either
inside or outside buildings; in dry or wet locations; and where
subject to corrosive vapors, providing the materials of construction
and insulation are adequately resistant to deteriorating elements.

5
 The use of cable tray installations may be prohibited in certain areas
by local codes.
 Power cables and instrumentation cables shall not be run in the
same cable tray.
 All cable tray systems should be designed as a complete system,
with no physical discontinuities unless totally unavoidable.
 Cable trays shall not be used as a grounding conductor.
 Cable trays shall be made electrically continuous; section to section
and cable tray system to earth.
 Ground path continuity shall be maintained between sections by the
cable tray manufacturer’s splice plates (where certified approved for
grounding) or by installation of a bonding jumper.

Materials used
Common cable trays are made of galvanized steel, stainless steel,
aluminum, or glass-fiber reinforced plastic. The material for a given
application is chosen based on where it will be used.[6] Galvanized tray may
be made of pre-galvanized steel sheet fabricated into tray, or may be hot-dip
galvanized after fabrication. When galvanized tray is cut to length in the
field, usually the cut surface will be painted with a zinc-rich compound to
protect the metal from corrosion.

Several types of tray are used in different applications.

6
Solid-bottom tray
provides the maximum protection to
cables, but requires cutting the
tray or using fittings to enter or
exit cables. A deep, solid
enclosure for cables is called a
cable channel or cable trough.

Ventilated tray
Has openings in the bottom of the tray, allowing
some air circulation around the cables, water
drainage, and allowing some dust to fall
through the tray. Small cables may exit the tray
through the ventilation openings, which may be
either slots or holes punched in the bottom.

Ladder tray
It has the cables supported by a traverse bar,
similarly to the rungs of a ladder, at regular
intervals on the order of 4 to 12 inches (100 to
300 mm).

Ladder and ventilated trays

May have solid covers to protect cables from
falling objects, dust, and water. Tray covers for
use outdoors or in dusty locations may have a
peaked shape to shed debris including dust, ice or
snow. Lighter cable trays are more appropriate in
situations where a great number of small
cables are used, such as for telephone or
computer network cables.

Channel Tray
Provides an economical support for cable
drops and branch cable runs from the
backbone cable tray system. Channel
cable tray is used for installations with
limited numbers of tray cable when
conduit is undesirable.

7
Wire mesh cable tray
A light weight to medium duty easy-to-install
cable management system which can provide
point-to-point pathways for cables in
supermarkets, hotels, hospitals and apartments,
small clean factories, etc. Our high quality wire
mesh cable tray is often fabricated with optimum
stainless steel or other metals by automatic quick
batch spot welding equipment. This wire basket
cable tray can be installed quickly with the
matching fast connection profile and accessories.

Perforated cable tray

It is the ventilated cable tray which has holes in
the bottom to realize the air circulation, water
drainage, or dust free falling through the tray.
The installed cables can be freely drawn forth
from the ventilation openings by easily processed
slots or holes through the tray on site. he single
perforated sheet is often such materials as hot
dip galvanized steel, galvanized sheet, stainless
steel, aluminum alloy, fiberglass or PVC. It is
the ideal product for cables which need both
protection from external damage and good ventilation. The perforated cable
tray is extensively used for any industrial or commercial application
requiring quick assembly and mechanical protection of cables. Large power
cables laid in the tray may require support blocks to maintain spacing
between conductors, to prevent overheating of the wires. Smaller cables may
be laid unsecured in horizontal trays, or secured with cable ties to the
bottom of vertically mounted trays

Mainly 3 standard thicknesses are available in Trays and Raceways

Heavy Duty Cable Tray / Floor Raceway Trunking (14 SWG)

Medium Duty Cable Tray / Floor Raceway Trunking (16 SWG)Light Duty
Cable Tray / Floor Raceway Trunking (18 SWG)

Cable tray systems are alternatives to wire ways and electrical conduit,
which completely enclose cables.

Cable trays are capable of supporting all types of wiring: such as

 High Voltage Power Lines.

 Power Distribution Cables
 Control cables

8
 Telecommunication cables
 Fiber Optical Cables
