A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF SELECTED 1

Abstract

A growing number of students are now opting for online classes. They find the traditional

classroom modality restrictive, inflexible, and impractical. Qualitative research was

carried out using a interview that was sent out to 5 students enrolled at Our Lady of

Fatima University. These data were analyzed by the researchers that also used for data

analysis, where the results are validated to assess the accuracy of the results, as best

described by the researchers and participants. The research findings revealed that the

students experience a lot of difficulties in online classes 4 out 5 participants who has the

same answer that they experience different difficulties in online classes. The research

findings also showed that the participants where adapting the new normal education.
A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF SELECTED 2

1. Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in December 2019, has had a major impact on
the functioning of private basic education institutions in the country and around the
world. It turned into a global health issue that affected everyone, regardless of
age.Socioeconomic status the world came to a halt, and the economy crashed when all
companies failed and operations are stopped for example, the majority of people count
and the sudden shift to online learning created a hot debate in Philippines the poor
condition of learners. The general condition of children in the public school sends
inequality with the DepEd mantra 'no child left'. Learning cannot be cancelled as much as
to drive the economy. Kasrekar (2020) sees one of the main issues as the conduct of
classes amid the closure order. Since face-to-face classes have a higher chance of
spreading, online teaching and learning is the most viable option.During an online class,
children can learn how to interact with others. It may difference in a face-to-face class so
the problem in an online class is students who have not had access to computer and
internet. They were experiencing critical thinking, become stressed, and their minds are
full of schoolwork that they are unable to complete due to a lack of equipment. The
experience of the student in new normal education is currently happening in these past
few months and among individual are having a hard time dealing with this detrimental
virus. Due of lack of resources and experiences on how to deal with this pandemic, while
maintaining the quality of education for all student, the government implemented a new
normal program to rise the economy for once and giving the education that every student
deserve while keeping them from the virus. It is indeed important to study these said issue
for every individual of this country to have an insight on what’s happening around us,and
especially for the student to have a better knowledge about this pandemic and for us to
enable to deal with it with enough knowledge and right action. They most likely chose an
online degree program because of its flexibility and convenience, allowing them to
continue doing what they needed to do, such as bonding with friends, playing basketball,
and making time for family members when needed, and then for online classes, some
A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF SELECTED 3
students learn skills that they developed as an online student, such as communication
skills, writing skills, and organizational skills, with each academic term complete,
strengthen skills that are in demand across every occupation. The key is to being able to
demonstrate these skills is on a resume, in a cover letter or in a job interview.

2. Theoretical Review
Synchronous online prosthodontic courses became a popular learning mode during the
2020 COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Nonetheless, the extent of learner participation and
completion of these courses remains unknown. All live online prosthodontic courses held
by an online dental school in China from February to May 2020 were retrieved. The no-
cost lectures could be accessed anonymously and viewed
repeatedly on the day of broadcast. Learning behavior data (teacher speaking time,
audience total, timing of first visit to the online classroom, viewing time,
and completion rate) were obtained. Learning progress was calculated by dividing
viewing time by teacher speaking time. When a learner progressed through 95% of a
lecture, the lecture was considered completed. A total of 41 781 learners participated in
18 online prosthodontic courses, which had a mean duration of
77.2±15.8 minutes. For each lecture, 2321 ±1454participants
attended, with 510 ±404 participants completing each session. There were 13 098
participants (31.35%) who viewed the lectures for less than 1 minute. Approximately half
of the participants viewed the lectures for less than 10 minutes, with their learning
progress failing to pass 10%.
The average completion rate was 21.97%, with variation in completion rate dependent on
when a learner first visited the online classroom. Significant differences were found
among the lecture completion rates and the timing of the first visit to the online
classroom (P<.001).
Based on the theoretical review discussed above, there is a high number of participants,
but low
learning progress and completion rates during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. It is
determined how the experience of students in New Normal Education at Online Classes.
Online classes provide flexibility, direct communication and course materials. Studies

showed that students are still processing during online class session, the date gathered
showed that majority of the student are adopting the new systematic way of leaning.

2.1.Statement of the Problem

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had huge disruptive effects on normal life, difficult
as it
already was in many countries. For schools, students and parents, the impact of closed
schools and children stuck at home with little or no access to learning, the effect has been
devastating many student difficulties learning because of the new normal education. For
example, in internet issue the internet is very slow because the signal is weak. It's also
here that you still need to load just to be able to attend class.
Research Question 1: What are the adjustment that you did in the new normal learnig
setting?
Research Question 2: As a student, what are the skills and strategies that helped you in
online learning?
Research Question 3: Based on your experience, how does online learning affect students
like you?
Research Question 4: What are the challenges that you have experience in online classes?
Research Question 5: How do you cope-up with the changes and problem brought by the
new normal way of education setting?

3. Research Methods
3.1.Research Design
The method used to conduct in this study is Qualitative research. It is the
design that was used by researchers. In this Qualitative research involves
interview to collect and analyze the response of the respondent in the
interview and to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences of each
respondent. The researcher used Qualitative research in order to gain insight;
explore the depth, richness, and complexity inherent in the uniqueness of
individual's lived situations and also used to uncover trends in thought and
opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. The researcher also used
Phenomenological method, in order to help understand the meaning of
people's lived experience. A phenomenological study explores what people
experienced and focuses on their experience of a phenomena. Therefore it will
be easy for the researcher to know the experience of the the grade 11 student
in new normal education at online classes. Most questions presented here are
close-ended and limit the respondents’ with unique insight. The independent
variable is the perspective of the researchers that will be the possible outcome
of the interview, while the dependent variable is the outcome of the
respondents ’opinion on the interview.

3.2.Research Locale
Senior High school students who are currently enrolled as Grade 11 in Quezon City were
the respondents in this study.
They were composed of five(5) students whose ages are within the bracket of 16-18years
old with the letter of approval for students arranged by researchers the subjects who
willing to participate and cooperate were included in this study by answering the question
that was administered to them via online interview. In addition, a purposive sampling
technique was used in this study. Purposive sampling is a type of non-probability
sampling technique.
A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF SELECTED 6
Non-probability sampling focuses on a sampling technique base on the judgment of the
researchers in this study the subjects were chosen according to the criteria imposed by the
researchers such as their age, grade level, and their experiences in online classes during
the COVID-19 pandemic.

3.3.Research Ethics
The researcher’s foremost concern in recruiting and using subjects is treating them
ethically and responsibly (Hansen and Myers, 2006a, 2012b). In order to create an ethical
research study, the researchers are obliged to follow research ethics. Furthermore, the
researchers claim that this study is a result of their combined knowledge and skills. The
facts used in here as a reference were properly cited and acknowledged. Thus, they do not
plagiarize any content of this study. Before they conduct an interview, the co-researchers
are given an informed consent that indicates the purpose of the study and the
responsibilities and obligation of all the respondents involved in the process. The
researchers assure that they voluntarily participated and even if they agreed to be
involved in this study, they are still given freedom to decide whether to leave the research
any time without penalty. Any information taken from the said participants who wish to
be not part of this study will be discarded from the research. In addition, the researchers
guarantee that all participants will remain anonymous. Any personal information about
the co-researchers will be handled with utmost confidentiality. Lastly, all knowledge
entrusted to the researchers is strictly monitored and used solely only for the purposes of
the studies.

3.5.Research Instruments
The researcher used qualitative method as their researcher instrument to collect
qualitative, numbered data to people’s to describe attitudes, opinions, behaviors. or
characteristics of the respondents.
A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF SELECTED 7

3.4.Data Collection
The researchers sought permission from the students at Quezon City to obtain data of
today’s experience in the new normal education. The researchers explained the purpose
of the study to the selected respondents and then they made sure each participant met
their initial specific criteria. The researchers collected the data through a google
meet/zoom link consisting of what they are experiencing now in the new normal
education such as how they ensure the quality of online classroom courses, how it affects
them, and what negative impact it has on them. The problems experienced by the
respondents will be identified by the second part of the survey questionnaire given to
them. The purpose of descriptive research is to validate the generated hypotheses
pertaining to the current situation in order to explain it.

5. Discussion
5.1.Conclusions
It is shown in the data that most of the students who were affected on new
normal education in online classes affecting their daily life or daily routines.
In final analysis, the researchers found out that the students are affected by
their time management, on how they will prepare for their online classes and
it’s also difficult for them to keep up with the studies due to their internet
problems.

5.2.Recommendations
The researchers recommended that the teacher and parents should understand ang guide
their students and children in new normal learning this study could help teacher and
parents to be more concerned with their students and child in academic performance,
physical health, mental health and how would they guide their students due to innovation
in new normal education.

Students have to develop skills for navigating the online course, self-regulation strategies
for staying on pace to complete the course, and new ways of asking for help when they
have a question, all without being in the same physical location as their online teacher.
A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF SELECTED 14
All we have to do is get used to the new normal education that we have to strive to dream
even if it is hard to fight, otherwise we will not achieve our dream. What we recommend
is that when you have a problem tell your teacher right away so he or she knows your
situation.
We all know that it is not only the students who are struggling but also our teachers but
even so, she still plays the role of mother to us at school, we just need to understand the
situations because we don’t know when this pandemic will end.
