EXPERIMENT Filters

The document describes experiments to study different types of filters, including low pass, high pass, and active filters. Objectives are to realize the filter circuits using various resistor and capacitor components, determine the cutoff frequencies, and characterize the filters by measuring input and output voltages at different frequencies. The experiments aim to identify filter types and orders based on component values and frequency response measurements.

Objective: Study and implementation of different types of filters.

I. Low Pass Filter (LPF)

The low pass filter is represented by the following figure: (R =330  & C = 100 nF)

Low pass filter

1. Realize this filter (Vin obtained from the function generator and Vo displayed on the oscilloscope).

2. Determine the cut-off frequency: Fc =

3. Fill this table

F = 100Hz F= 1000 Hz F = 10 KHz F = 50 KHz

Vin 8V 8V 8V 8V

II. High Pass Filter (HPF)

The high pass filter is represented by the following figure: (R =330  & C = 100 nF)

High pass filter

1. Realize this filter (Vin obtained from the function generator and Vo displayed on the oscilloscope).

2. Determine the cut-off frequency: Fc =

3. Fill this table

F = 100Hz F= 1000 Hz F = 10 KHz F = 50 KHz

III. Filter study

Suppose the black box is a filter. If you don’t know the type and the cut-off frequency of this filter. Just
do the following steps:

1. Connect a function generator on the input of the filter and an oscilloscope on the output of the filter.
2. Vary the frequency of the input signal and verify the value of the output signal.
If Vout = 0.7*Vin, stop varying the frequency. This frequency is the cut-of frequency.
3. To determine the type of the filter:
a. If Vout equals Vin when the frequency is less than the cut-off frequency: LPF Filter
b. If Vout equals Vin when the frequency is greater than the cut-off frequency: HPF Filter
4. To determine the order of the filter: if at f = 10*fc
a. Vout = 1/10 vin =0.1  20 log (Vo/ Vi) = -20 dB, order 1
b. Vout =1/100 vin  20 log (Vo/ Vi) = - 40 dB order 2
c. Vout = 1/1000 =0.001  20 log (Vo/ Vi) = - 60 dB order 3
5. Apply this procedure to the following filter and indicate its type and its cut-off frequency

Type of this filter? (R =330  & C = 220 nF)

1. Cut-off frequency, FC =

2. The type of filter?

3. Order of this filter?

1. Realize and study this filter:

2. Determine the cut-off frequency : Fc =

3. Fill this table

F = 7 Hz F= 70 Hz F = 700 Hz F = 7 KHz
Vin 1V 1V 1V 1V
Vout
4. Order of this filter
