2. Convert time in hours and minutes to minutes and vice versa.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Find the starting time and finishing time in minutes and hours.
2. Find the duration of a time interval in minutes and hours.
3. Solve word problems involving time in minutes and hours.
4. Work in teams to participate in an in class task.

Success Criteria:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Plot the correct starting time and ending time on the timeline in minutes and hours. (LO 1)
2. Add increments of elapsed time correctly to find duration. (LO 2)
3. Represent given information such as starting time, ending time and duration of an activity on a timeline. (LO 3)

Time Learning Phases Resources

10 Readiness
mins 1. Teacher recaps with the students how to tell and write time to 1 minute. Teacher displays the time
of different countries on a digital clock. Students are required to show the time displayed using their
arms as the hour and minute hand.
LESSON PLAN

2. Then, teacher recaps with the students how to convert time in hours and minutes to minutes and
vice versa by asking students questions about the conversion of time. For example:
● how many minutes are there in an hour?
● how do you convert 150 minutes to hours?

3. Teacher tells the students that they will be learning how to find the time interval between the start
time and finish time by using a strategy.

30 Engagement Elapsed Time Mountain

mins 1. Teacher demonstrates how to find the duration of a time interval by using the “Elapsed Time Strategy
Mountain” strategy.
Timetable
2. Teacher asks students to look at their weekly school timetable. With guidance from the teacher,
students have to use the Elapsed Time Mountain strategy to find the answers to these questions:
● How long are you in school for on Wednesdays?
● What is your longest period on Friday?
● On a particular Friday, every class is shortened to 45 minutes for each lesson. What time will
the lunch break start?
● On a particular Thursday, every class is shortened to 45 minutes for each lesson but the
duration of the lunch break remains the same. What time will Maths class end?

3. Teacher gives students the following scenario.

● Scenario: 3A’s class annual carnival is happening in a month! The event time is on July 10th
from 11:10 am to 14:30 pm. During this time, there will be 5 different activity time slots for
guests to participate. In each time slot, there will be 2 games, and 3 students will be in charge.
The following is the 5 different time slots:
LESSON PLAN

4. Students work groups of 3 to 4 to participate in an in class task that requires them to:
● Identify the duration of time for each time slot according to their group number.
● Plan out 2 activities/games for each specific time slot. (One activity at a time)
● Calculate the duration for each activity for each time slot.

5. Teacher will facilitate and guide the students throughout the activity. Scaffolding will be provided if
needed. At the end of the activity, teacher will compile all the ideas and calculations, and provide
feedback to the students.

20 Mastery Worksheet
mins 1. Students work independently to complete a worksheet that requires them to solve word problems by
using the “Elapsed Time Mountain” strategy. Padlet Link: Click Here

2. Students submit the worksheet to be checked by the teacher.

3. At the end of the lesson, students reflect on the lesson by posting their reflections on the Padlet link
provided. They will be using the following questions as a guide to complete their reflection:
● What I have learnt in today’s lesson?
● What challenges did I face in the lesson?
● What do I want to know more about time?
