Year 4 Assessment Revision Guide

May 2021
English

Reading

 To be able to read accurately and at a speed that is sufficient for them to focus on
understanding what they read rather than on decoding individual words.
 To identify how language, structure, and presentation contribute to meaning.
 To discuss words and phrases that capture the reader’s interest and imagination.
 To check that the text makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and
explaining the meaning of words in context.
 To infer characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying
inferences with evidence.
 To identify main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and summarising these.
Writing

 Pupils should be able to write down their ideas with a reasonable degree of accuracy
and with good sentence punctuation.
 To extend the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of
conjunctions, including: when, if, because, although

 To begin to use paragraphs.


 To write a narrative with a clear structure, settings, character and plot.
 To produce non narrative writing using simple organisation devices such as headings.
 To be able to proof read and check errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Punctuation and Grammar:

 To place the possessive apostrophe accurately in words


 To use the present perfect form of verbs

 To choose nouns or pronouns appropriately for clarity and cohesion and to avoid
repetition
 To use and identify conjunctions, nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs.
 To using commas after fronted adverbials and in a list

mark/question mark.

Maths
Number and Place Value:

 To recognise the value of each digit within a 4 digit number – Thousands, Hundreds,
Tens and Units

 To be able to create the biggest and smallest numbers possible when given 4 numbers
e.g 2,1,5,1 Smallest – 1125 Biggest – 5211
 To understand and identify odd and even numbers
 To understand how to find a number that is halfway between 2 given numbers including
decimal numbers e.g 3 - 3.5 - 4
 To understand negative numbers in the context of temperature

Addition and Subtraction:

 To use a written method to subtract (compact or expanded column method)


 To use knowledge of number bonds and partitioning to add together 3 numbers

Multiplication and Division:

 To recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12


 Multiply by partitioning e.g 23 x 4 = 20 x 4 and 3 x 4
 To understand how to multiply multiples of 10 by using multiplication facts
 To understand how to divide using a written method e.g. short division / bus stop
method
 To find answers to multiplication/division questions by using the inverse. E.g. 12 x ___ =
144 using the inverse to find the answer 144 ÷ 12 = 12
 To recognise and use factor pairs, e.g. factor pairs for 24 = 1 and 24, 2 and 12, 3 and 8, 4

 To understand how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000 including decimal

Fractions:
 To understand how to count up and down in tenths and hundredths
 Understand that ½ = 0.5, ¼ = 0.25 and ¾ = 0.75
 Compare and order fractions with the same denominators
 Compare numbers with the same number of decimal places up to two decimal places,
including amounts of money
 Round decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number
 To understand and identify equivalent fractions e.g ½ is equal to 2/4
 Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator e.g ¼ + 2/4 = ¾
 To identify two fractions with a total of 1 e.g ¼ + ¾ = 1

Measurement:

 Length – use, read and write km, m, cm, and mm understanding and using the
relationship between each
 Mass – measure and compare using kilograms and grams and understand the
relationship between each
 Capacity – Use read and write litre (l) and millilitre (ml) and understand the relationship
between each
 To understand how to read different scales with some degree of accuracy (e.g
thermometers, weighing scales, balancing scales etc).
 Read write and convert between analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour clocks
 Understand how many seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour, hours in a day, days in a
week and months in a year.
 To understand how to use this information to be able to answer word problems with
one or more steps.

Shape and Geometry:

 To identify 2D and 3D shapes and their properties


 To understand how to classify shapes (right angles, regular or irregular, lines of
symmetry, quadrilateral, polygons)
 To be able to identify acute, obtuse and right angles
 To understand the properties of right, equilateral, isosceles and scalene triangles

Statistics:

 To understand how to present data using appropriate graphs including bar charts and
time graphs
 To understand how to read the data shown on different graphs
 To understand how to solve comparison, sum and difference word problems involving
the information presented in bar charts, pictograms, tables and other graphs.
