How can Personal Physical Fitness Affect your Academic Performance
Physical fitness is known internationally as a means of staying healthy and keeping fit, it
is less known however for the vast amount of benefits it has on the performance of students in
schools. Personal Physical Fitness is said to have many advantageous properties in relation to
academic performance. Physical activity is said to promote brain power; assist students with
motivation, concentration, memory and reasoning skills as well as improve classroom attitudes
Personal physical fitness promotes brain power. Studies have shown that a few minutes
of physical fitness a day can increase the rate at which persons have brain synapses which are
faster and stronger than a normal brain synapse (Hol, 2020). This in turn results in higher levels
of academic performance in areas such as mathematics and english. Physical activity increases
the flow of oxygen to the brain and this also aids in the increase of brain power in individuals.
Physical activity assists students with motivation, concentration, memory and reasoning skills.
It is believed that physical fitness enhances basic cognitive function and in doing so facilitates a
person's attention and memory learning skills (Kohl & Cook, 2013). Studies show that after
participating in physical activities, students respond more quickly and accurately when given
cognitive tasks. According to Kohl and Cook, 2013, "A single bout of moderate-intensity
physical activity has been found to increase neural and behavioral concomitants associated with
the allocation of attention to a specific cognitive task”. It is also noted that when physical activity
is used during recreation periods, the attention of students increase upon returning to their
academic duties. Students' working memories are also said to show improvement when they
Physical fitness improves classroom attitudes and behaviors. Its shown that students who
participate in physical fitness programs have better attitudes and less behavior problems than
persons who do not participate in physical fitness programs, which in turn improves students
academic performance. Physical activities are said to stimulate the brain to release endorphins
which are known to enhance a person's mood and improve their energy levels. When these
endorphins are released in students it allows them to have an increase in self-confidence and
better resilience making way for improved attitudes in the classroom. Physical activities helps to
improve the concentration of students in the classroom as well as allows them to remain focused
There are many ways in which physical activities contribute and help to maintain the
academic performance of students, some of which are covered in this paper. Physical fitness
activities promote brain power; assists students to concentrate, stay motivated, maintain their
memory and reasoning skills, physical fitness activities also help students to improve and
