Vieta's Formula Solved Examples

Example 1. Find the sum and product of the roots of the quadratic equation
x 2 − 5x + 6 = 0 𝑥2 − 5𝑥 + 6 = 0

Solution.

Using Vieta's Formula, we can find the sum and product of the roots:

Sum of the roots (x 1 + x 2 ) = −(−5) = 5 (𝑥1 + 𝑥2 ) = − ( − 5) = 5

Product of the roots (x 1 x 2 ) = 6 (𝑥1 𝑥2 ) = 6

Therefore, the sum of the roots is 5 56 6

Example 2. Find the sum and product of the roots of the cubic equation
2x 3 − 7x 2 + 3x + 1 = 0 2𝑥3 − 7𝑥2 + 3𝑥 + 1 = 0

Solution.

Using Vieta's Formula, we can determine the sum and product of the roots:

7 7
Sum of the roots (x 1 + x 2 + x 3 ) = 2 (𝑥1 + 𝑥2 + 𝑥3 ) = 2

Product of the roots (x 1 x 2 x 3 ) = − 12 (𝑥1 𝑥2 𝑥3 ) = − 2

Therefore, the sum of the roots is 72 − 12 −

Example 3. If the roots of the equation x 2 − 4x + 7 = 0 𝑥2 − 4𝑥 + 7 = 0α 𝛼β 𝛽α 2 + β 2 𝛼2 + 𝛽

2

Solution.

Using Vieta's Formula, we know that the sum of the roots (α + β) (𝛼 + 𝛽)−(−4) = 4 −( − 4) = 4αβ 𝛼𝛽7 7

Now, we can use the identity (α + β) 2 = α 2 + β 2 + 2αβ (𝛼 + 𝛽)2 = 𝛼2 + 𝛽2 + 2𝛼𝛽

Substituting the values, we have (4) 2 = α 2 + β 2 + 2(7) (4) = 𝛼2 + 𝛽 + 2(7)

2 2

Simplifying, we find

α 2 + β 2 = 16 − 14 = 2 𝛼2 + 𝛽2 = 16 − 14 = 2

Hence, the value of α 2 + β 2 𝛼2 + 𝛽 2 2

Example 4. Find the sum of the squares of the roots of the equation 3x 2 + 4x − 2 = 0 3𝑥2 + 4𝑥 − 2 = 0

Solution.

4 4
Using Vieta's Formula, we know that the sum of the roots (α + β) (𝛼 + 𝛽) is equal to − 3 − 3 , and the product of
roots αβ 𝛼𝛽 is equal to − 23 − 3 .
2

We also have the relationship α 2 + β 2 = (α + β) 2 − 2αβ 𝛼2 + 𝛽2 = (𝛼 + 𝛽)2 − 2𝛼𝛽.

Substituting the values, we have

Example 5. If the roots of the equation x 3 − 2x 2 − 5x + 6 = 0 𝑥3 − 2𝑥2 − 5𝑥 + 6 = 0 are α 𝛼, β 𝛽, and γ 𝛾,

find the value of αβ + βγ + γα 𝛼𝛽 + 𝛽𝛾 + 𝛾𝛼.

Solution.

Using Vieta's Formula, we know that

α + β + γ = 2 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾 = 2, and

αβ + βγ + γα = −5 𝛼𝛽 + 𝛽𝛾 + 𝛾𝛼 = − 5

Therefore, the value of αβ + βγ + γα 𝛼𝛽 + 𝛽𝛾 + 𝛾𝛼 is −5 −5.
