TUTORIAL 4 – APPLICATIONS OF DIFFERENTIATION & INTEGRATION

Question 1
(a) Find the equations of the tangent and normal to the curve 𝑦𝑦 = 2𝑥𝑥 2 at the point (2,8).
(b) For each of the functions given below determine the equation of the tangent at the points
indicated.
i. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 3𝑥𝑥 2 − 2𝑥𝑥 + 4 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 𝑥𝑥 = 0 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 3.
ii. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 5𝑥𝑥 3 + 12𝑥𝑥 2 − 7𝑥𝑥 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 𝑥𝑥 = −1 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 1
Question 2
Solve the following problems:
(a) The free fall of a heavy ball bearing released from rest at time, t = 0 sec. Given the freefall
equation is s (t) = 4.9 t2.
i. How many meters does the ball fall in the first 3 sec?
ii. What is the velocity and acceleration then?
(b) At time t, the position of a body moving along s-axis is s (t) = t3 – 6t2 + 9t m.
i. Find the velocity at t = 4s
ii. Find the body acceleration each time the velocity is zero.

(c) At time t ≥0, the velocity of a body moving along the s-axis is v (t) = t2 – 4t + 3.
i. Find the velocity at t = 3 s
ii. Find the body’s acceleration each time the velocity is zero.

(d) Had Galileo dropped a cannonball from the Tower of Pisa, 179 m above the ground, the
ball’s height above the ground t sec into the fall would have been s = 179 – 16t2
i. What would have been the ball’s velocity and acceleration at time, t?
ii. About how long would it have taken the ball to hit the ground?
iii. What would have been the ball’s velocity at the moment of impact?

(e) An object, dropped from a height of h has a location of y (t) = -16t2 + h ft after t seconds.
We dropped a small object from a height of 60 feet.
i. Where is the object and what is its velocity after 1:5 seconds?
ii. Suppose there is 30 feet tall street light 10 feet away from the point where the object
will land. How far is the shadow of the object from the base of the street light at t
= 1:5?
iii. How fast is the object’s shadow moving at t = 1:5 s?
(f) The volume of a cube is increasing at the rate of 1200 cm3/min at the instant its edges are
20 cm long. At what rate are the lengths of the edges changing at that instant?

(g) A hot air balloon rising straight up from a level field is tracked by a range finder 500 ft
𝜋𝜋
from the lift-off point. At the moment the range finder’s elevation angle is 4 the angle is
increasing at the rate of 0.14 rad/min. how fast is the balloon rising at that moment?

(h) A girl flies a kite at a height of 300 m, the wind carrying the kite horizontally away from
her at a rate of 25 m/sec. How fast must she let out the string when the kite is 500 m away
from her?

(i) The radius of a cylinder is increasing at a rate of 1 meter per hour, and the height of the
cylinder is decreasing at a rate of 4 meters per hour. At a certain instant, the base radius is
5 meters and the height are 8 meters. What is the rate of change of the volume of the
cylinder at the instant?

(j) James is filling an ice cream cone. The cone is 12 cm tall and has a radius of 4 cm. If the
ice cream fills the cone evenly at a rate of 1.5 cm3/s, what is the rate of change of the height
when the height is 5 cm?
