Introduction and background

Infrastructure development in any country will lead to an increase in demand for

construction materials. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is undoubtedly the most popular
construction material because it is the main ingredient required to produce concrete, which
has desirable characteristics such as high strength, ease of placement, good setting time and
high durability. However, the cement manufacturing process is not environmentally friendly
because of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, both from the fuel used and the chemical
conversion processes involved. Around 7- 8% of total global CO2 emissions is from the
cement manufacturing process [1][2] . Therefore, many attempts have been made to
minimize the consumption of cement. The most popular method is to introduce pozzolans
such as fly ash (FA) as supplementary materials to cement. Since the FA is a waste by-
product from coal power plants and considered to be a pollutant, utilization of FA in
producing concrete helps to reduce its carbon effects. It also gives as a(provide) beneficial
properties to concrete, such as reducing heat of hydration and improving durability [3].
Butwe will use both the fly ash and Nano particles to increase the strength of cement.

Nanotechnology is gaining widespread attention and being applied in many fields to

formulate materials with novel functions due to their unique physical and chemical
properties. Nano material is defined as a very small size particle in a scale of 10 −9 meter,
produced from modification of atoms and molecules in order to produce larger surface area
[4]. The addition of nano particles in concrete is more effective than micro size particles and
is recognized as a means to improve the strength and durability properties of concrete. [5]

Most of the work to date In recent years, limited studies have been conducted on the
additions of Nano silica fume as partial replacement of cement in concrete on the hydration
and compressive strength behavior [6].But we will try on high energy mixing with the use of
fly ash and fumed silica as a partial replacement aggregate for cement.

Problem Statement

We have chosen this project to avoid following problems;

 To increase the strength and life time of the concrete.

 To avoid cracks.
 To avoid creep.
 With the use of fumed silica to increase the workability of concrete
 To avoid plastic shrinkage.
Objectives
 The main objective of our project is to replace Nanoparticals (fumed silica) and Fly
ash which is used as a partial replacement replacement aggregate for cement . The
fly ash is very cheap and is very easily available.
 The aim of energy saving and recycling of waste materials, addition of FA as a
natural pozzolan can improve the rheological, mechanical and durability properties
of concrete at higher ages.
 Nano materials such as nano silica leads to further improvement in resistance and
strength.
 To reduce the cost, and protect the environoment with the use of fly ash as a cement
aggregate.
Scope of the project
Using Fly ash and Nanoparticales as a partial replacement aggregat for cement has
several unique characteristics
which make it competitive among other lightweight materials.
 Using fly ash as a partial replacement to improve workability and durability of
concrete.
 It is an economical alternative.
 It can save natural resources.
 To achieve high strength concrete (HSC) .
 To minimize the cost and protect the environment with the use of fly ash.

Literature Review

The word concrete comes from Latin word “concretus”meaning compact or condensed.
Concrete is acomposite material composed of gravels or crushedstones (coarse aggregate),
sand (fine aggregate) anhydrated cement (binder). For concrete to be goodconcrete it has to
be satisfying in its hardened stateand in its fresh state while being transported from themixer
and placed in the formwork. The requirementsin the fresh state are that the consistence of
the mix issuch that the concrete can be compacted and also the Concrete achieves its
strength after 28days of placingthe concrete.[7][8][9].Mixing For High-Performance
Concrete The use of micro- andnanosilica or nanotubes leads to improvements in the
compressive strength of high-performance concrete. Ultrasonication is an effective means
for the mixing, wetting and dispersing of nanomaterials in cement or concrete. Micro silica
is widely used in concrete today, leading to higher compressive strength or water and
chemical resistant concretes. That can reduce material costs and energy usage. New
nanomaterials, such as nano silica or nanotubes lead to further improvements in resistance
and strength. Concrete Background Information Concrete is composed of cement, e.g.
Portland cement and other cementitious materials, such as fly ash and slag cement,
causeway aggregate (gravel, limestone, granite, sand), water and chemical admixtures.
Typical admixtures include accelerators or retarders, plasticizers, pigments, silica fume or
High Reactivity Metakaolin (HRM). Micro silica is a typical admixture in concrete. [10]

Methodology

The methodology to achieve the above mentioned research objectives will include the
following steps:

 Study and data collection from different sources

 Use of class(F) fly ash & fumed silica with different percentage.
 Mix design
 Casting and curing of cylinders
 Lab activities
 Compilation of results
