Kinematics 2d Lec1

A bullet is fired from a gun with a maximum range of 40m. For maximum range, the angle of projection is 45 degrees. Using the equation for maximum range (Rmax = u^2/g), the velocity is calculated as 20m/s. Using this velocity and the equation for maximum height (Hmax = u^2sin^2(45)/2g), the maximum height is calculated as 10m.

Projectile mot ion is experienced by an object

or particle (a projectile) that is thrown near
the Earth's surface and moves along a
curved path under the action of gravity only
This curved path was shown by Galileo
to be a Parabola.

Method to Analyse 2 Dimensional Motion
Motion in 2 Dimensions is basically combination of TWO 1-Dimensional
motions.
Vertical motion => shadow on y
This motion is under the influence of
Acceleration due to gravity i.e.. g
Horizontal motion => shadow on x

In the absence of any acceleration as ax = 0

Method to Analyse 2 Dimensional Motion
To analyse motion in 2 Dimensions, we can break all motion parameters along
X &Y

Projectile is basically, combination of 2 linear Motions happening

simultaneously i.e. We can do it easily with the knowledge of Motion in 1
Dimension and Vector Resolution.

A bullet fired from a gun can have a Maximum range of 40m.
Determine the velocity of projection and the maximum height
attained by the bullet if the bullet is fired for maximum range.

Solution:

= 40 m, θ =450, g = 10 m/s 2
R max

= u
2
= 40 m
R max g

u2 = 40 × 10

∴u = √400

∴ u = 20 m/s
For maximum height

R max = 40 m, θ = 450, g = 10 m/s 2, u = 20 m/s

u 2 sin 2 θ
H =
2g
400× sin2 45 0
∴H= 2 × 10

400 1 2
∴H =

∴ H = 10 m
