AVERAGE SPEED
If acertain distance is covered at two
different speeds i.e., if adistance x is covered at 'u'
km/hr and the same distance is covered at'v' km/hr, then the average speed of the journey
is calculated as 2uv

Ex.6 Aman leaves atown at 8a.m. on his bicycle moving at 10km/hr. Another man leaves
the same town at 9a. ll. On his scooter moving at 30Km/hr. At what time does he overtake the
man on the bicycle?
’ Let't' be the time taken for the scooter to travel the distance, so as to overtake the
bicycle. The time taken by the bicycle to cover the same distance will be (t + 1)
Thespeed of the bicycle is 10Km/hr. and that of the scooter is 30Km/hr.
Now, using the strategy the distance traveled by the scooter as well as the bicycle till the
point of overtake will be the same

"If two bodies initiate at two opposite points and start moving towards each other, then sum
of the distance covered by them tilltheircrossing point is the total distance between the two
extreme points".
We knowthat the total distance covered by the two cars is the total distance between their
starting points.
i.e. 50(t + 1) + 60t = 600
50t + 60t +50 = 600

The ratio of the specds of Aand B = 4:3.
Hence, using strategy (5),we get the time taken by them in the ratio 3:4.

Relative speed
If two bodies are moving (in same direction or in opposite direction) then the speed of the
body with respect to another is called its relative speed.
Examples
Case(1) If thetwo trains are moving in the same direction at ukm/hr and'v'km/hr, such
that u > v, then there relative speed = (u - v)km/hr.
Ex. 9 Iftwo cars are moving in the samedirection with the speeds 50km/hr and 35km/hr
respectively, find their relative speed.
- Here, the two speeds are 50km/hr and 35km/hr.
u= 50kn/hr and v=35km/hr.
Relative speed
-(u- v)km/hr. =(50 - 35,km/hr. = 15km/hr.
Hence, thc relative specd of the two cars is 15Km/hr.
Case(2) If two trainsare moving in the opposite direction at ukn/hr. and rkm/hr, then
their relative speed= (u + V)km/lhr.
Ex. 1o Iftvo buses are moving in the opposite direetion, their speed having 45km/hr and
40km/hr respectively, find their relative speed?
