Portal Frame
Portal Frame
Portal frames, used in several Civil Engineering structures like buildings, factories,
bridges have the primary purpose of transferring horizontal loads applied at their
tops to their foundations. Structural requirements usually necessitate the use of
statically indeterminate layout for portal frames, and approximate solutions are often
used in their analyses.
Degree of Indeterminacy
In order to analyze a structure using the equations of statics only, the number of
independent force components (Reactions) must be equal to the number of
independent equations of statics.
Nos. of Unknown Reaction – Nos. of independent equations of statics = n
Then, the external indeterminacy = nth degree.
And, if number of girder = n, then, the internal indeterminacy = 3n

Assumptions:
1. The inflection points are located at one-tenth of the span from each end
of girder
2. The girder axial force is zero.

Approximate Lateral Load Analysis by Portal Method

Assumption:
1. The points of contraflexure in all the members lie at their midpoints.
2. Horizontal shear taken by each interior column is twice that of the each
exterior column.

Horizontal forces are assumed to act only at the joints.
