Wind Force

The document provides the steps to calculate wind pressures and design forces on the walls and roof of a rectangular building due to wind loads as per Indian code IS 875 Part 3. It gives the wind data and design factors for Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. It then calculates the design wind pressure and pressure coefficients for the walls and roof. The final values of wind load are calculated separately for long walls, short walls and roof portions.

ECE 702 Wind Analysis & Design of Tall Structures Wind Force

1) Calculate wind pressures and design forces on walls and roof of a rectangular
building having plan dimensions of 15 x 65 m and height of 6m. The building is
situated in Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) in an upcoming institutional complex
on a fairly level topography. The building has a flat roof supported on load
bearing walls.

Sol) Wind Data:

Wind Zone: Zone V (Vb= 50m/s) (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 5.2)

Terrain category: Terrain Category 3 (IS:875-pt.3, Sec

5.3.2.1)

Design Factors:

Risk Coefficient Factor k1 = 1.00 (IS:875-pt.3, Sec 5.3.1,

Table-1)

Terrain & Height Factor k2 = 0.91 (IS:875-pt.3, Sec

5.3.2.2, Table-2)

Topography Factor k3 = 1.00 (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 5.3.3.1)

Importance Factor for Cyclonic Region k4 = 1.00 (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 5.3.4)

Wind Directionality Factor Kd = 0.90 (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 6.1.1)

Wind Force Page 1|5

Assuming the building is of Medium permeability. (IS:875-pt.3,
Sec 6.2.2.2)

Design Wind Pressure:

Design Wind Speed = VZ = Vb×k1×k2×k3×k4 = 50 ×1.0×0.91x1.0×1.0 = 45.50 m/s

(IS:875-pt.3,
Sec 5.3)

pZ = 0.6 (VZ)2 = 0.6× (45.50)2 = 1242.15 N/m2 (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 5.4)

Area Averaging Factor Ka (IS:875-pt.3, Sec 6.1.2,

Table-4)

Area of short wall = 6 x 15 = 90 m2

As the area of short wall is between 25 – 100 m2 tributary area, Ka must be linearly
interpolated.

Thus, Ka for short wall = 0.81

pd = pZ ×Kd×Ka = 1.242×0.9×0.81 =0.9054 kN/m2 (short wall)

Area of long wall = 6 x 65 = 390 m2

Area of roof = 15 x 65 = 975 m2

As the area of long wall & roof > 100 m2 tributary area, Ka = 0.80

pd = pZ ×Kd×Ka = 1.242×0.9×0.8 = 0.894 kN/m2 (long wall & Roof) (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 6.1)

Wind Load Calculations:

F = (Cpe-Cpi) ×A× pd (IS:875-pt.3,

Sec 6.2.1)

Wind Force Page 2|5

Internal Pressure Coefficient, Cpi = ± 0.5 (IS:875-pt.3,
Sec 6.2.2.2)

Buildings shall be analysed once for pressure of 0.5 from inside and then for a
suction of –0.5 from inside as per (IS:875-pt.3, Sec 6.2.2.1) along-with external
pressure coefficient.

External Pressure Coefficients

Design Pressure Coefficients for Walls:

h 6 l 65
= = 0.40 ; = = 4.33
w 15 w 15

h 3 l
For  0.50 and   4 , Cpe for walls is tabulated below
w 2 w

Angle of 0o 90o
Incidence
Wall – A +0.7 -0.5
Wall – B -0.25 -0.5
Wall – C -0.6 +0.7
Wall – D -0.6 -0.1

(Table 5 of IS:875-
pt.3)

These will be combined with internal pressure coefficients, equal to Cpi = ± 0.5

Cpnet for Walls A or B, = 0.7 – (-0.5) = +1.2, pressure

= -0.5 – (+0.5) = -1.0, suction
Cpnet for Walls C or D = 0.7 – (-0.5) = +1.2, pressure
= -0.6 – (+0.5) = -1.1, suction

Design pressures for walls:

For Long walls: F = Cpnet×Anet× pd

Wind Force Page 3|5

=1.2 × 1×1 × 0.894 = 1.072 kN/m2 Pressure

= -1.0 × 1×1 × 0.894 = -0.894 kN/m2 Suction

For Short walls: F = Cpnet×Anet× pd

=1.2 × 1×1 × 0.9054 = 1.0864 kN/m2 Pressure

=-1.1 × 1×1 ×0.9054 =-0.9054 kN/m2 Suction

On Roof: Using the Table 6 with roof angle 0o without local coefficients.

h 6
= = 0.40
w 15

h
For  0.50 , pressure coefficients are tabulated below
w

Portion of roof Wind Incidence Angle

0o 90o
E -0.8 -0.8
F -0.8 -0.4
G -0.4 -0.8
H -0.4 -0.4

Design Pressure Coefficients for Roof:

Positive internal pressure will act towards the roof while negative internal pressure
will be away from the roof. Hence +ve internal pressure will be added to –ve
external pressure coefficient and vice-a- versa. The combinations will have to be
made separately for zones E, F, G, H etc. as shown below.

Wind Force Page 4|5

For Roof: F = Cpnet×Anet× pd

= -1.3 × 1×1 × 0.894 = 1.1622 kN/m2 Pressure

= 0.1 × 1×1 ×0.894 = - 0.0894 kN/m2 Suction
