SECTION 42 12 13

ELECTRICAL PROCESS HEATERS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. Section includes: Furnish and install tank immersion heating systems as shown on
the drawings and specified herein. The heating systems shall include but not be
limited to; immersion heater, cables, adapters, power connection kits, thermostatic
temperature controller, temperature sensors, mounting equipment and tank
insulation material.

C. Calculations shall be provided to provide a basis for sizing the tank immersion
heater systems. The following criteria for the calculations shall be provided:

Notes:
1. Refer to section 43 06 40.05, Schedule of Liquid Chemical Properties for
details of Sodium Hydroxide (CA) and Sodium Bisulfite (SB).
2. The existing FRP tank has 2-inch of Polyfoam 650.
3. The new HDPE tank shall have the insulation specified hereinafter.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Submittals shall be made in accordance with Section 01 33 00 – Submittal


Procedures.

B. Submit the following prior to installation:

1. Product Data and technical specifications.

2. Warranty.

3. Bill of Materials.

4. Heat system sizing calculations.

5. Schematic (elementary) diagrams and wiring diagrams.

6. Interconnection wiring diagrams.

7. Field test procedures.

C. Submit the following prior to field testing:

1. O&M Manuals: In accordance with Section 01 33 00.

D. Submit the following prior to startup:

1. Field test results.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 TANK IMMERSION HEATER SYSTEM

A. Heaters shall be immersed in a chemical storage tank that is located outdoors. The
heaters shall be inserted through the 2-ft diameter manway at the top of the tank and
lowered to the tank bottom. The heaters shall have integral support legs to correctly
space it from the bottom of the tank.

1. Material: 316 stainless steel with holiday-free PTFE coating.

2. Cable Riser: PTFE coated from heater connection to above the top of the tank
manway.

3. Thermal Protector: Resettable J-type thermocouple.

4. Certifications: UL Listed.

5. Voltage: 240 VAC, 1-phase.

6. Wattage: 6000 watts per heater, 2 per tank.

7. Acceptable Manufacturers:

a. Process Technology HXRL Tempco PTFE3LAD4 series.

b. Or equal as approved by the Engineer.

B. Temperature Controller:

1. Programmable microprocessor-based system that operates a relay.

2. Enclosure: NEMA 4X rated, wall mountable type.

3. Display: LED digital display, 4-digit, 1/2” height, minimum. Displays


setpoints and current temperature.

4. Switch: ON/OFF/RESETAD4 with electro-mechanical relay.

5. Light: “Heater On”.AD4

6.5. Control features:

a. Setpoint: pushbuttons for temperature up, down and set.

b. Alarm conditions can be remotely indicated via a form C dry contact.

c. Status LEDs indicate whether the digital display is showing the set point
or actual temperature.

d. Sensor short and break protection.

e. Programmable high-alarm shutdown.

f. Non-volatile memory.

g. Range: -40 deg-F to +999 deg-F.

h. Accuracy: +/ 0.25% of span.

i. Field adjustable on/off differential dead-band (1 to 99 deg-F).

7.6. Temperature Sensor: 1000100AD4-ohm platinum RTD, two-wire, PTFE coated.


Length as required for the system.

8.7. Voltage: 240 VAC, 1-phase.

9.8. Amperage: Rated for expected load.

10.9. Inputs: Scalable voltage and current inputs.

11.10. Output: 4-20 mA temperature.

12.11.Acceptable Products:

a. Process Technology C-DE seriesTempco PCM-1000 series with TEC-910


high limit controlAD4.

b. Or equal as approved by the Engineer.

C. Tank Insulation:

1. Insulation Material: Type 4 per section 40 42 13.10, Process Piping Insulation.

2. Thickness: 2-inch, minimum.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with the Manufacturer’s instructions, Section 33 12 01 – Basic


Mechanical Materials and Methods, and the project drawings.

B. Ground the heating system as required by the manufacturer’s instructions and the
CEC.

C. The tank low level alarm shall be set to a level above the top of the heater elements.

3.2 FIELD TESTING

A. Functional Test: Test in accordance with Section 01 75 17 – Field Testing and


Startup. The system shall be tested to confirm it maintains the specified temperature.
