Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Police Minister Bheki Cele has accepted that some police officers need to be trained to fully
understand the seriousness of gender-based violence (GBV). Cele intends to open a unit that
will specifically deal with the crime and has sent out a strong warning to police officers that
subjected survivors of GBV to secondary trauma that they will face serious consequences.

“We are developing the programme of having dedicated members of the South African Police
Services (SAPS) who focus on GBV because it is difficult to find anybody that understands the
seriousness of the matter. But if we train them and we keep them dedicated to this unit to look
after those people, we will know that once they gain experience, they will also develop empathy
and become sympathetic.”

QUESTION 4

Read the extract below and answer the question that follows:

Cross-cultural relationships

All relationships are to some extent cross-cultural, in that both parties come together
from different families to build a new unit together. Whilst for many couples this will be a
natural set of compromises to which both partners will adjust over time – for others the
differences can be fundamental, with one finding it difficult to understand the other’s way
of looking at the world and vice versa.

The loyalty that we often feel towards our own culture and traditions can sometimes
mean that we find it difficult to understand another’s. In a relationship situation when two
people have differing beliefs, it is these feelings that can be pushed to the forefront -
overwhelming the individual feelings that we have for one another.

Construct an essay on romantic relationships.

Use the following as a guideline:

● Define the term ‘romantic relationships’ and provide TWO ways that
cross-cultural romantic relationships could lead to a loss of identity for the
individuals involved. (1+2) (3)
● Discuss FOUR challenges that could be unique to cross-cultural romantic
relationships. (4X2) (8)
● Propose THREE strategies that cross-cultural couples could put into place
to create a better understanding of each other’s differences. In your
answer, also indicate how EACH suggestion could lead to a more
harmonious relationship. (3X3) (9)

Student Loans

So, you have done your time in school, and you are finally heading into the big bad
world, well, tertiary education at least. You have probably spent hours looking at
campuses you would like to apply to, researched all of the different courses and already
planned the first epic parties that you are going to throw.

There is just one thing that stands between you and student life: finance, or rather the
lack thereof. If your parents are not able to help you out, you are going to have to find
the money elsewhere. The good news is that you have options, and these options do
not all involve working three jobs while trying to pass your chosen course. In South
Africa, a student loan is a viable option, but before you sign up for anything, you should
consider a few things.

Construct an essay on Student Loans.

Use the following as a guideline:

● Define the term ‘student loans’ and list TWO reasons why potential
students would apply for a student loan. (1+2) (3)
● Discuss FOUR reasons why school leavers should research all of their
financial options before they decide to choose a specific one. (4X2) (8)
● Provide THREE solutions to help graduates pay back their student loans
after they have finished their course. In your answers, also indicate how
EACH strategy could lead to student loans being paid off as quickly and
effectively as possible. (3X3) (9)

Available from: https://greatmomentsofsportsmanship.com

Sport and Nation Building

A 16-year-old kid sat in the corner of a poor South African pub watching SA beat England in the
final of the Rugby World Cup, Paris 2007. Wide-eyed and hungry, that kid’s name was Siya
Kolisi.

“It’s tough to stay on the right path because sometimes hunger makes you do things that you
never thought you would do,” says Siya. Sport was “my way out”. He played on a dirt pitch with
just his jockey shorts (that’s all he had) and was spotted and taken to his local club, African
Bombers.

A few years later, former Munster coach, Rassie Erasmus (now SA coach) picked the
Springbok’s first black captain, Kolisi, in its 126-year history. Kolisi, led the South African team
onto the pitch in the 2019 RWC Final vs England in Yokohama Stadium, Japan. SA’s first black
captain carried the hopes and dreams of the whole of the ‘rainbow nation.’

● Define the term ‘nation building’ and briefly explain TWO ways that
sport can help to decrease negativity in our country through nation
building. (1+2) (3)
● Describe TWO ways that sports professionals should behave at sports
