Graphs 4 Quadratic Graphs TI84 Plot Maximum Quadratic Formula

This document provides examples and exercises on plotting graphs and functions using a TI-84 graphing calculator. It includes 3 examples of plotting different functions and finding their maximum and minimum values. It also includes 1 exercise with multiple parts involving plotting a quadratic function that models stopping distance of a car based on speed and using the graph to find specific values.

EXAMPLE 1

Plot the curve 2

y=2 x −3 x−2 in the range −2 ≤ x ≤ 4.

Press y=

Enter

Y1¿ 2 x2 −3 x −2 Y2=0 to label

x-axis

Enter xmin=−2
xmax=4

Press graph

Unlike CASIO CG20

TI-84 seems to have no

−2−1 0 1 23 4
label!
EXAMPLE 2
y=−3 x +3 x+ 6 in the range −2 ≤ x ≤ 3.

Tips to avoid Error:

Replace Subtract to Minus sign
or vice versa

−¿ Subtract right of 6

- Minus down of 3
EXAMPLE 3 MATH MODELLING SKILL
Adiel keeps goats, and she wants to use a piece of
land beside a straight stone wall for the goats.
The area of this land must be rectangular in
shape, and it will be surrounded by a fence of
total length 50 m.

a What dimensions of this rectangle will provide the goats with the largest area of
land?

b What range of values can the rectangle

width ( x m) take in order for the enclosed area to be at least 250 m2?

7 The total stopping distance y metres of a car in dry weather travelling at a speed of x
mph is given by the formula y=0.015 x 2 +0.3 x where 20 ≤ x ≤ 80.
a Copy and complete this table and use it to draw a graph of y against x .
x (miles/hour) 20 30 40 50 60 70 80
y (m) 22.5 52.5 94.5
b Use your graph to find the stopping distance for a car travelling at 55 mph.
c At what speed does a car have a stopping distance of 50 m?
d The stopping distance is measured from when an obstacle is observed to when the
car is stationary. Therefore, a driver’s reaction time before applying the brakes is an
important factor.

Sam is driving at 75 mph when she sees a stationary school bus ahead of her. She
manages to avoid hitting the bus by stopping just in time. Her braking distance is 83.5 m.
Calculate her reaction time. (1 mile ≈ 1600 m)
