QA-MST-07-Method Statement of Bolt Tightening | R1 | 16.11.2020
1 Introduction
This report relates to the POD 2 roof and façade structure of the ADF Project in Dariyah, KSA. The
purpose of this instruction is to ensure that the bolts in the assembly of steel structure projects
are properly torqued.
This instruction covers all steel manufacturing subcontractors involved in the steel structure project.

2 Application
2.1 Method of Application
Site application and tightening works of bolt assemblies will be carried out according to
the requirements of EN 1090-2: 2018 standard.
Before starting the preloading, the components within a bolt group must be connected to each other
in a tight contact.
A steel feeding plate to be placed in between is used to eliminate the thickness difference. The plates
to be used will be made within the standard procedures in a way that the main material is not
damaged and the surface friction is considered.
Tightening will first be done with 1000N electrical torqueing. It will then be manually controlled
with a 4000 N torque booster.
Tightening works of pre-loaded bolt assemblies will be done by using torque wrenches specified
below.
- GEDORE DR 8563 (Range: 155 – 760 Nm)
- GEDORE DX 8571 (Range: 520 – 1000 Nm)
- GEDORE EK 8581-01 EK (Range: 600 – 1500 Nm)
As shown in Figure 2, Figure 3, Figure 4, it should be made from the middle of each bolt group
towards the free edges. If necessary, additional tightening repetitions should be made to
ensure uniform preload.

As a result of the connection, the number of threads of the bolt outside the nut will be at least four
threads.
The preload value to be applied must be 50% of the torque value which is shown in Table 1.
With the torque force used in the tests, it should reach the preload values in EN 1090-2.
Preload values for diameters not included in Table-1 are found with the help of the formula below:
Fp = 0,7xFubxAs
Fp = Preload value(N)
Fub = Tensile strength(N/mm2)
As = Bolt cross section(mm2)

Note - Inspection of the bolt kit should be done by applying torque to the nut with a calibrated torque
wrench. The goal of the control is to check that it is equal to at least 1.05 times the torque required
for starting.
Care should be taken to ensure that the turning actions is meticulously kept to a minimum.
The following conditions to be applied:
a) The torque wrench used for inspection must be correctly calibrated and have an accuracy of ±4%.
b) The inspection should be carried out between 12 to 72 hours after the completion of tightening
of the bolts in the subgroup in question.
