Lab 9 CC

This document provides instructions for a lab experiment to study the input and output characteristics of a transistor in the common collector configuration. Students are instructed to connect components in a circuit diagram and collect data by varying voltages and currents to measure input base current, output emitter current, and voltages. Graphs are then to be plotted from the collected data.

Object: To study the input and output characteristics of a transistor in the Common Collector (CC)
configuration. Apparatus Required:
1. Regulated Power supply, Breadboard and Connecting wires
2. Transistor (2N3904, 2N3906), Resistors (1KΩ, 100KΩ)
3. Oscilloscope, Function Generator and Multimeter (MM)

Theory: [30 minutes]

A common-collector circuit configuration is provided in Fig. 9.1. In this configuration, the collector
terminal is common for both input and output signals. This configuration is also known as the emitter
follower configuration because the emitter voltage follows the base voltage. This configuration is mostly
used as a buffer. These configurations are widely used in impedance matching applications because of
their high input impedance. In this configuration, the input signal is applied between the base-collector
region and the output is taken from the emitter-collector region. Here the input parameters are V BC and IB
and the output parameters are VEC and IE as shown in Figure 9.2. The common collector configuration has
high input impedance and low output impedance. The input and output signals are in phase.

Procedure: [150 minutes]

Input Characteristics:

1. Connect the circuit as shown in Fig. 9.1

2. Keep the output voltage VEC = 0V.
3. Vary VBB gradually, note down IB and VBC in Table 9.1.
4. Repeat above procedure (step 3) for VEC = 10V and 20V.
