Buck Converter MATLAB SIMULINK MODEL

This document discusses how to design a buck converter in MATLAB/SIMULINK software. It defines a buck converter as a DC to DC converter that steps down the source voltage and describes its basic components and operation. It also covers key parameters like duty cycle, input and output voltages, switching frequency, and inductor and capacitor sizing.

How to Design Buck

Converter in
MATLAB/SIMULINK
Software
By: Dr. J. A. Laghari
Buck Converter
 Def: A buck converter is a DC to DC converter with an output voltage smaller
than the source voltage.
 A buck converter is sometimes called a step-down converter since it "steps
down" the source voltage.
Buck Converter Method to Step-Down Voltage
 Buck Converter may consists of at least two semiconductors (a diode and a
transistor) and at least one energy storage element: a capacitor, inductor, or
the two in combination.
Duty Cycle
 Def: Duty cycle is the ratio of time a load or circuit is ON compared to the
time the load or circuit is OFF.
 A duty cycle or power cycle is the fraction of one period in which a signal or
system is active.
 Duty cycle, sometimes called "duty
factor," is expressed as a
percentage of ON time. A 60% duty
cycle is a signal that is ON 60% of
the time and OFF the other 40%.
Buck Converter Parameters
Parameter Rated Value
Input Voltage (Vs) 12 V
Output Voltage (Vo) 5V
Switching Frequency (fs) 25 kHz
Duty Cycle (D) 0.4
Inductor (L) 100e-6 H
Capacitor (C) 1000e-6 F
Load (R) 10 Ω
Pulse Generator Parameters
Parameter Rated Value
Switching Frequency (fs) 25 kHz

Time Period = 1/frequency = 1/25000 = 0.00004 second = 40e-6 s

Pulse Width = % Duty Cycle = 40%
Open Loop Buck Converter
Closed Loop Buck Converter
 In the closed loop system, it is possible to get the output extremely close to
the desired output voltage.
 This closed loop buck converter system is very important topic for the
research.
 Many optimization techniques as well as intelligent techniques can be used
on this topic to complete
