A. Protoderm

Q. An object just floats in sea water. Will it float or sink in fresh water? (P)
A. It will sink (the same volume of fluid is displaced in the two cases; since seawater is denser

but not necessarily in the right order. Match the ionisation energies with the corresponding
element. (C)
A. O – 1314 kJmol-1
F – 1681 kJmol-1
Ne – 2081 kJmol-1

Q. What name is given to the cavity in which the human heart is located? (B)
A. Pericardium

Q. Which part of the mammalian heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs? (B)
A. Right ventricle

Q. What particle is emitted in the thermionic emission? (C)

A. Electron

Q. What particle is absorbed in a uranium fission reaction? (C)

A. Neutron

Q. Express in mathematical form z varies directly as x and inversely as y2. (M)

2
A. (k a constant)

Q. Express in mathematical form y is partially constant and partially varies directly as x. (M)
A. (c and k are constants)

Q. By what method will you separate two liquids of different boiling points? (C)
A. Fractional distillation

Q. By what method will you separate two solids? (C)

A. (Fractional) Crystallization

Q. An equilibrium reaction is exothermic. How will the equilibrium constant change if the
reaction is heated after reaching equilibrium? (C)
A. Keq will decrease (Le Chatelier Principle)

Q. For the equilibrium reaction SO3 = SO2(g) + O2, what is the relationship between its Kp and Kc.
(C)

A. Kp = Kc (RT)1 [

Preamble
Find the magnitude of the given vector. (M)
Q. a = 3i – 4j.
A. 5 [ ]

Q. a = 5i + 2j
A. 13 [ ]

3
Q. What is the difference between an excited neutral atom and an atom of the same kind but
lower energy? (C)
A. Electrons in the excited atom occupy higher energy states

Q. What particle is emitted when an excited neutral atom de-excites? (C)

A. Photon (accept light)

ROUND 2
Q. Explain why there are more flowers than fruits. (B)

A. In order for fruits to form, a flower should be pollinated. Pollination requires a vector or
carrier to transfer the pollen from the anther to the stigma. Hence in the absence of the vector or
a carrier, pollination will not occur and that affects fruit formation.
The flowers need to mature and produce pollen and stigma, hence all the immature flowers that
are yet to be pollinated add up to the total number of flowers allowing them to outnumber the
fruits.
Pollination may not take place for fruits to develop if male and female flowers are produced at
different times.
The male pollen may not land on the stigma for fruits to develop if they are separated by
significant distance.

A. F [sin (-x) = - sin x]

Q. Current in photoelectric cell increases as the frequency of light is increased. (P)

A. F [Photocurrent is determined by photon flux(intensity), not frequency]

Q. If two masses approaching each other stick together when they collide, the total kinetic
energy before the collision equals the total kinetic energy after the collision. (P)
A. F [Such a collision is inelastic and energy is not conserved]

Q. Two unequal masses are attached to the ends of a compressed light spring. When the spring is
released the initial acceleration of the smaller of the two masses will be larger than that of the
other mass. (P)
A. T [The forces on the masses are equal and opposite; therefore, the magnitude of the
acceleration of the smaller mass must be larger than that of the other mass.]
