1. What are the three bases to classify consonant sounds? Elaborate your answer.
a. Voicing, is it voiced or voiceless
b. Place of Articulation, where the sounds are produced
c. Manner of Articulation, how the sounds come out of your mouth

2. Define [p], [n], [ð] according to the classification above.


a. [p] = Voiceless, Bilabial, Stop
b. [n] = Voiced, Alveolar, Nasal
c. [ð] = Voiced, Dental, Fricatives

3. What are the differences between phoneme and allophone? Define them by including
examples.
a. Phoneme is the way letter is formed into word and has its own meaning, and if you
change any letter of it, it will change the meaning of its word (semantic difference).
Example:
Bee [bi]
Pee [pi]
 There are 2 minimal pairs, [b] and [p]. if you change the those phones, it will
change the meaning of its words
b. Allophone is the way letter is pronounced in a word, the letter can be in front, middle,
and back of a word. And it doesn’t change the meaning of its word.
Example:
Pea [pi] when you pronounce it, it sounds [phi]
Tap [taep] when you pronounce it, it sounds [taep’]
 No matter what you pronounce it, it doesn’t mean different things

MORPHOLOGY
4. Identify the morpheme(s) in these following words.
a. Endearment: En + dear + ment
b. Predetermination: Pre + determinate + ion
c. Transportation: Transport + ation
d. Temperature: Temperature
e. Dehumanize: De + human + ize

5. Define inflectional morpheme and derivational morpheme.


a. Inflectional morpheme changes the tenses (+s,+ed,+ing), noun plural, noun case,
comparatives but doesn’t change its meaning
b. Derivational morpheme can change its part of speech and word’s meaning (+ to –)

6. For each of the words below, list the morphemes that make up the word and indicate for each
constituent morpheme whether it is (1) a bound or free form; (2) a root, prefix, infix, or suffix;
(3) and, for prefixes, infixes and suffixes, whether they are inflectional or derivational
morphemes.
