INTRODUCTION

Application of technology in the field of education has

expanded significantly. Technologies like Smart
Whiteboards, Tablet and e-books are being used
prevalently.
A shift from the traditional way of teaching and learning to
a more adaptive and personalized learning has been noticed.
The shift is being greatly assisted by Information
Communication Technologies (ICT) and Tablet PC which
have helped in making classrooms more interactive and
personalized for students and hence increase their interest in
learning. Using Smart Whiteboard together with E-
notebook in a learning environment has the ability
strengthen communication between teachers and students.
Moreover, E-notebook adoption in higher education helps
the students in the learning process.
By placing the entire course curriculum on E-notebook ,
besides the environmental benefits, improved perceived
usefulness of E-notebook s for students has also been noted.
The course curriculum is a book length publication in
digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and
readable on E-notebook , Smart Phones, computers or other
electronic devices.

This study has two main parts. Firstly, based on previous
knowledge and study of in field of education, the idea that
of E-notebook can replace the school bag is conceived.
Secondly, to verify this claim, a mixed mode study using
qualitative and quantitative methods is carried out at a
private school where the e-notebook s are can be used.

BACKGROUND OF RESEARCH

IDEA GENERATION
With the advent of Tablet PCs in the mid-2000s their sale
and usage has been increasing rapidly. It has also been
predicted that within few years it would overtake the
desktop pc market . The usage of computers in education
has shown many advantages. Since E-notebooks and other
forms of mobile computers are being predicted to become
more widely used in the future, it becomes logical to study
their impact in imparting education.
E-notebook s have been found to have many advantages
over traditional pen and paper based classrooms. They are
portable and can be easily used to take down notes which
can be shared then and there with others if required .
Teaching can be made more immersive and interesting with
them as they can be used for a wide variety for audio-visual
learning materials . Use of E-notebook during a lecture
helps both the teacher and students as the students can
follow the slides on their personal E-notebook s and take
notes .
therein. They don't have to wait after class for the teacher to
email the slides. Using a digital pen with a E-notebook a
teacher can make lectures more interactive and students can
instantaneously have the annotated copies of the slides on
their personal E-notebook s. Wi-Fi enabled E-notebook s as
well make the classroom more interactive as students can
search the web to get information they require in activities
like group work . With the use of e-notebook , conventional
Page 9 of 43
books can be easily replaced with e-books hence giving the
ability to carry a large number of books in a small portable
device.

Some scholars have showed the importance of E-notebook

and they stated that it could replace the physical school bag
and hence called the E-notebook as an E-Bag. in their work
defined the E-Bag as a digital depot in which the user can

store pictures, songs, e-books, video and other digital

materials . Research works have described the many
advantages of E-Bag and also have stressed on the fact that
it is also less burdensome on school children than physical
school bags.
From the aforementioned discussions, it can be clearly
understood that E-notebook s are light portable devices that
can be used as textbooks as well as notebooks and also have
Page 10 of 43
a range of other features that promote learning. From the
previous studies it can be concluded that E-Bag is nothing
but a E-notebook containing all the learning materials such
as e-books, calculator and multimedia material that a
student requires at school. The children easily became
comfortable with using the stylus and ink free features of
the E-notebook .

Research and study

Technology acceptance studies are common way of

determining future use in Information Systems and related
areas. Many technology acceptance studies have been
carried out to observe the usage of E-notebook s in an
educational setup. Most of these have shown that students
do intend to use E-notebook in their classes and have a
positive attitude towards it. However, most of these studies
have also been on university level students. The commonly
used acceptance model is Technology Acceptance Model
(TAM) however some researchers have extended it with
constructs from other popular models like Unified Theory
of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT).
In the above sections the various research works on E-
notebook were discussed. From the above discussions the
lack of research works on the acceptance and use of E-
notebook at school level can be observed.

Therefore, in this research the acceptance of E-notebook
from the perspective of school children has been studied.

Related Research Work

Researchers have studied the use of E-Notebook in university

classrooms. According to many studies e-notebook has been found to
have a very positive impact on teaching and learning, for example using
interactive multimedia in classrooms, for annotations and easy search and
using stylish for engineering courses. Growing advantages of e-notebook
give more chances to researchers to observe its use. However, very few
studies have analyzed the importance of E-notebook in the classroom for
school children, as most of the studies have been on university students.
An observation of E-Notebook usage in elementary school reported
improved teaching, playing and learning as some of the benefits .
Children can draw by using stylus pen easily. In spite of facing
technological issues, the children were very interested in using e-
notebook and they preferred using E-notebook over the traditional
methods. E-notebook has shown to be a feasible tool for providing young
children a medium of representing their ideas in the early-childhood
classroom. The children easily became comfortable with using the stylus
and ink free features of the E-notebook .

discussed. From the above discussions the lack of research works on the
acceptance and use of E-notebook at school level can be observed.

Therefore, in this research the acceptance of E-notebook from the

perspective of school children has been studied.

METHODOLOGY

In this research both qualitative and quantitative methods have been used so as
to get a better and well-rounded opinion on the usage and acceptance E-
notebook by school children.
Qualitative Approach

12 students from the class were randomly picked and interviewed after they had
filled the questionnaire. Some of the questions asked where - "Do you like E-
notebook over regular books?", "Are you comfortable using E-notebook ?" and
"How do you think can the E-notebook initiative be improved?". The important
excerpts from the informal conversational interviews are quoted below. Many
students commented on technical aspects of the E-notebook s. They are listed
below

“Scrolling is tiresome"

"Tablet hangs frequently"

"It would be better if a digital pen was provided like in Samsung Galaxy Tabs"

"It doesn't feel natural like books"

"Quality of the Tablet PC is not good, it looks cheap'

All students in general complained about the following issues.

“E-Notebook s were only used for reading and not writing as there was no
digital pen with it”.

“They couldn't take the E-notebook s home so they were pretty disappointed
about it”.

“Their eyes strained after using E-notebook s for long hours”.

Informal conversational interviews were carried out after the survey was
completed by the participants. This form of interview was considered correct as
it is more adaptable as per the interviewee's priorities. The important excerpts
from the interviews have been presented in the results section of this paper.

Quantitative Approach

The methodology for the quantitative approach is described Where the

difference age group of students are selected to give their decision it
mainly contain two age group children in the school and youngsters in

college .the response was way better than it was expected .A positive
respond was received from both the age group.

Research Instrument

The research questions were adopted from the work of previous

researchers that studied relationships . Scale was used for all the items in
the questionnaire. The questionnaire also collected demographic
information pertaining to age and different groups of students.

The Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) construct had four questions/items.

This construct checked how easy it was for the students to use E-notebook
. For example, one of the construct items stated "I find completing my
desired tasks on Tablet PC easy to do". The Perceived Usefulness (PU)
construct tried to check how useful the students felt the E-notebook was
for their education. This construct also had four items. For example, one
of the construct items was "Using Tablet PC improves my learning
performance". The third construct Behavioral Intention (BI) had two
items. It checks if the students would like to use E-notebook in the future.
For example, one item was "I plan to use Tablet PC for learning in the
future".
Data Collection

Paper based survey questionnaires were used to collect the data.

DISCUSSION

All the hypotheses in this research are strongly supported like other
studies using E-notebook in education and how much at ease a person is
while using a particular system; however from the qualitative analysis
excerpts, a number of technical issues can be seen. The weak relationship
could be due to these technical issues. The small sample size for the
quantitative analysis could also have affected the outcome of the analysis.
The result from the analysis shows that only 46% of the students in the
school have intention to use E-notebook in the future which goes against
the findings of previous studies which had predicted that E-notebook was
preferred by students. The interviews conducted could shed a light on the
reason for this rejection of E-notebook by the school children. As can
been deduced form the interview excerpts the E-notebook s provided in
the school has many technical drawbacks like frequent hanging of the
system or no stylus was provided. Some of the issues like 'scrolling', 'eye
strain', 'unnatural feeling while reading' are common to all the available
E-notebook s in the market.

4P’s of Marketing

PRODUCT(E-notebook) Product refers to a good or service that a

company offers to customers. Ideally, a product should fulfill an existing
consumer demand. Or a product may be so compelling that consumers
believe they need to have it and it creates a new demand. To be
successful, marketers need to understand the life cycle of a product, and

business executives need to have a plan for dealing with products at every
stage of their life cycle. The type of product also partially dictates how
much businesses can charge for it, where they should place it, and how
they should promote it in the marketplace.

PRICE(10,000k-15,000k)

Price is the cost consumers pay for a product. Marketers must link the
price to the product's real and perceived value, but they also must
consider supply costs, seasonal discounts, and competitors' prices. In
some cases, business executives may raise the price to give the product
the appearance of being a luxury. Alternatively, they may lower the price
so more consumers can try the product.

Place(college and school students)

When a company makes decisions regarding place, they are trying to

determine where they should sell a product and how to deliver the product
to the market. The goal of business executives is always to get their
products in front of the consumers that are the most likely to buy them

PROMOTION( digital marketing )

Promotion includes advertising, public relations, and promotional

strategy. The goal of promoting a product is to reveal to consumers why
they need it and why they should pay a certain price for it. Marketers tend
to tie promotion and placement elements together so they can reach their
core audiences. For example, In the digital age, the "place" and
"promotion" factors are as much online as they are offline. Specifically,
where a product appears on a company's web page or social media, as
Page 22 of 43
well as which types of search functions trigger corresponding, targeted

ads for the product.

1.Digital Banners

2. Through Pamphlets

3. Social Media Advertising

Advantages of tablets E-notebook:

1. portability (can work from everywhere and small enough to put

in handbags);
2. small in weight and size (lighter than most laptops);
3.a flexible screen (You can choose to place the screen in
landscape or portrait.);
4. the handwriting recognition;
5. offer the same functionality as a normal computer;
6. a powerful pen recognition;
7.great and handy for note taking;
8. ease and comfort and ease of use;
9. an effective learning and teaching enhancement tool;
10. use as an interactive teaching aid for tutorials and external
student consultation;
11. provide a very powerful audio recording;
12. connection to the internet from anywhere;
13. serve as an organizer to professional with much less paper on
hand;
14. good for a project presentation;
15. longer battery lifetime;

Disadvantages of E-notebook :
1.hardware is prone to damage;
2. traditional keyboards are much more comfortable;
3. the screen size is too small in comparison with a laptop;
4.do not come with optical drives for use with CDs or DVDs;
5. potential screen damages and repair costs (more chances of
screen damage to E-notebook than to laptops; tablet computers are
prone to problems like cracks, dead pixels, blown back-light bulbs
and bad sensors);
6. difficulties to work on the small screen as compared to larger
screen size of the laptops;
7. less number of ports;
8. cannot embrace massive amounts of data;
9. the type and speed of the input process (inputs with E-notebook
become slower than those with laptops);

Challenges with E-notebook

Further analysis of the open-ended response in the survey data revealed a

number of issues faced by the students, which prevented them from fully

utilizing the E-notebook in education. While some students were grateful

about being given a E-notebook to enhance their academic pursuits, a

majority of students had various concerns about the use of E-notebook in

education. Out of the 79 students who responded to the question regarding

their concerns with the use of E-notebook, more than half of them

(45.63%) expressed their dissatisfaction with the use of the device. The

main issues included inability to connect to the USP campus Wi-Fi, short

battery life, problems with charging the device, inability to download

documents and access Moodle, slow processing speed, automatic,

continuous screen rotation, fragile screen, and concerns regarding bearing

the cost of the repairs of the device.

When asked to make final comments about the use of tablets, the students

responded with a variety of ideas and suggestions that the university could

consider so that they could make optimum use of this device in their

learning. Out of 149 students who responded to this question, 44% of

them expressed their concerns about the technical issues they faced with

their devices. The main issues faced were the same reported during the

first round of data collection, which were as follows:

• The quality of the device in general.

• Issues related to charging the device as the charging port plays up.

• Difficulty in connecting to the USP Wi-Fi and accessing Moodle.

• Paying the cost of repairing the tablets.

• Fragile screen and the need to provide screen protectors.

• Insufficient battery life.

• Keyboard malfunctions

PESTLE Analysis

PESTEL Analysis is a strategic framework used to evaluate the

environment of a business by breaking down the opportunities and risks

into Political, Economical, Social, Technological, Environmental, and

Legal Factors. PESTEL Analysis can be an effective framework to use

incorporate Strategy Planning and for identifying the pros and cons of a

Business Strategy. This framework is an extension of the PEST strategic

framework, one that includes.

Political factors

When looking at political factors, you are looking at how government

policy and actions intervene in the economy and other factors that can

affect a business. These include the following:

 Taxation- tax rates and incentives

 Product labelling and other requirement

 Wage legislation-minimum wages and overtime

Environmental factors

Environmental factors concern the ecological impacts on business. As

weather extremes become more common, businesses need to plan how to

adapt to these changes. Key environmental factors include the following:

 Law regulating environment population

 Climate change

 Weather

Economic factor

Economic Factors take into account the various aspects of the economy,

and how the outlook on each area could impact your business. These

economic indicators are usually measured and reported by Central Banks

and other Government Agencies. They include the following:

 Unemployment

 Inflation rate

 Interest rate

Social factors
PESTEL analysis also takes into consideration social factors, which are

related to the cultural and demographic trends of society. Social norms

and pressures are key to determining consumer behavior. Factors to be

considered are the following:

 Attitude of people

 Culture

 Education level

 Demographics and skill level of population

Technological factors

Technological factors are linked to innovation in the industry, as well as

innovation in the overall economy. Not being up to date to the latest

trends of a particular industry can be extremely harmful to operations.

Technological factors include the following:

 Updating technology

 Impact on cost structure

 Technology’s impact on product offering

Legal factors

Legal factors pertain to any legal forces that define what a business can or

cannot do. Political factors involve the relationship between business and

the government.

• Data protection

• Health and safety law

• Consumer protection

SWOT ANALYSIS
SWOT analysis (or SWOT matrix) is a strategic planning and
strategic management technique used to help a person or
organization identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats related to business competition or project
planning. It is sometimes called situational assessment or
situational analysis. This technique is designed for use in
the preliminary stages of decision-making processes and
can be used as a tool for evaluation of the strategic
position of organizations of many kinds (for-profit
enterprises, local and national governments, NGOs, etc.)It
is intended to identify the internal and external factors
that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving the
objectives of the venture or project. Users of a SWOT
analysis often ask and answer questions to generate
meaningful information for each category to make the tool
useful and identify their competitive advantage. SWOT has
been described as a tried-and-true tool of strategic
analysis, but has also been criticized for its limitations, and
alternatives have been developed.

STRENGTH WEAKNESS
 Product customization 1. Poor customer services
 Environmental record 2. Low investments in R&D
 Competency in mergers and acquisitions 3. Weak patents portfolio
 Direct selling business model 4. Low differentiation

OPPORTUNITIES THREATS
 Expand services and enterprise solutions  Growing demand for smartphones
businesses and Laptops
 Obtain more patents through acquisitions  Profit margin decline on hardware
 Strengthen their presence in emerging products
markets  Slowing growth rate of Market
 Tablet market growth  Intense competition

Strengths
1. Product customization. E-notebook allows its
customers to customize their laptops. Such
services were not originally found within any other
major computer retailer (and currently only Sony
and Toshiba allow that), but add great value to the
customers and provides E-notebook with a
competitive advantage.
2. Environmental record. E-notebook is engaged in
many green initiatives and has received many
rewards for being an eco-friendly business. This is
a benefit when working with public and
government agencies.
3. Competency in mergers and acquisitions. Over
the last five years E-notebook has spent $13
billion for successful mergers and acquisitions,
which brought patents, new capabilities, assets and
skills to the business.
4. Direct selling business model. E-notebook
doesn’t sell its products through big-box retail
outlets but instead sells directly to consumers and
enterprises, keeping their already thin profit
margin to themselves.

Weaknesses
1. Poor customer services. Once praised, E-
notebook ’s customer services deteriorated due to
outsourcing its call centers offshore. E-notebook
invested a large sum of money in fixing this, but

hasn’t yet regained its previous reputation for
customer services.
2. Low investments in R&D. The company spends a
much lower percentage of its income on R&D that
its main competitors and thus, missed an
opportunity to develop strong products for
smartphones and tablet markets as well as to learn
new skill and capabilities.
3. Weak patent portfolio. Due to low spending on
R&D E-notebook hasn’t acquired a strong
portfolio of patents and is now finds it hard to
compete in lucrative smartphones and tablets
market.
4. Low differentiation. Low price was once E-
notebook ’s competitive advantage but the
company is no longer able to provide competitive
prices. Apart from the price, E-notebook ’s
products are little differentiated from competitors’
products and are in competitive disadvantage if the
price offered by competitor is lower.

Opportunities
1. Expand services and enterprise solutions
divisions. E-notebook provides various services
(cloud, security and infrastructure) and enterprise
solutions (servers, networking and storage), which
are the most profitable E-notebook ’s business at
the moment. E-notebook business should focus on
growing these divisions as they promise better
growth opportunities and higher profit margins.

2. Obtain more patents through acquisitions. If E-
notebook wants to diversify, it needs new
technology patents and new ideas. E-notebook
hasn’t properly established its R&D facilities to
discover new technologies and patents, so the only
feasible way to obtain patents and technologies is
to acquire other companies.
3. Strengthen their presence in emerging
markets. Emerging economies are the fastest
growing markets for laptops, tablets and other
electronic devices. E-notebook has a good
presence in these markets but should strengthen its
position as the company experiences declining
market share.
4. Tablet market growth. Tablet market is expected
to grow in double digits for the next few years and
the company has a great opportunity to release
new tablet models and benefit from the market
growth.

Threats
1. Growing demand for smartphones and
tablets. With a lower price and strongly improved
capabilities, consumers often choose tablets and
smartphones over laptops. The growing demand
for the previous devices takes a share out of
laptops, the main stream of revenue for E-
notebook .
2. Profit margin decline on hardware products. E-
notebook ’s main income is from selling hardware
products, which prices will increase in the future
Page 37 of 43
due to rising raw material prices. This will add to
costs for E-notebook and will further cut the profit
margin.
3. Slowing growth rate of the laptops
market. Growth rate of the computer market is
slowing down and in the near future the markets
will become saturated. It will prove hard for E-
notebook to compete in such market or at least
fight back the lost market share.
4. Intense competition. The company faces intense
competition in all its business segments. It
competes in terms of price, quality, brand,
technology, reputation, distribution and range of
products, with Acer, Apple, HP, IBM, Lenovo and
Toshiba.

Threat to new entrants

A high threat of new entrants makes an industry less attractive – there are

low barriers to entry. Therefore, new competitors are able to easily enter

into the industry, compete with existing firms, and take market share.

There is a reduced profit potential as more competitors are in the industry.

Competitive Rivalry

Competitive rivalry is a measure of the extent of competition among

existing firms. Intense rivalry can limit profits and lead to competitive

moves including price cutting, increased advertising expenditures, or

spending on service/product improvements and innovation.

Supplier Power

Supplier Power Definition in Porter's five forces, supplier power refers to

the pressure suppliers can exert on businesses by raising prices, lowering

quality, or reducing availability of their products. ... Furthermore, a strong

supplier can make an industry more competitive and decrease profit

potential for the buyer.

Buyer Power

Buyer power gives customers/consumers (buyers) the ability to squeeze

industry margins. It is a profitability ratio measuring revenue after

covering operating and by pressuring firms (the suppliers) to reduce

prices or increase the quality of services or products offered.

CONCLUSION AND FUTURE STUDY

In this study previous literatures on use of E-notebook for education were

analyses so as to identify the advantages and acceptance of E-notebook s.

In most of the previous studies E-notebook s were well received by the

students and hence researcher predicted that E-notebook could be used to
impart learning. However, in this study it was found that the students of
the studied school do not prefer to use E-notebook .

To verify the idea of using E-notebook for education at schools in a

developing country like India this study was carried out. The results of
this study are surprisingly opposite to the findings of the other
researchers. As per the analysis 62% of the students want to use E-
notebook . To get a better understanding of the situation and find the out
the reasons for this no acceptance, informal conversational interviews
were also conducted.

The interviews revealed a number of points which could explain the low
acceptance rate. Some of the points dealt with technical issues inherent to
E-notebook technology. The interview excerpts quoted in the results
section should be taken as a cue by future researchers and work should be
done to remove these technical drawbacks.

The other latent reason not explicitly stated by the students can be
deduced as lack of adequate support to the E-notebook initiative by the
school authorities. This can be understood from their responses in which
they said that they were not allowed to take E-notebook to their homes,
they also complained about the quality of E-notebook and lack of digital
pen like in other commercially available tablets. The reasons for this

point of an educational institutions administration is very important in the
