Context – Fishplates
Narrow gauge railways have specialized use in mines. In South Africa, rail haulage is
the principal transportation method in underground mining. Haulage is important in the
efficient operation of an underground mine, as it represents around 15% of the total
operating costs and is the main artery of the mining operation removing rock, supplying
material, and transporting personnel to and from the working face. As mining
progresses deeper and further from the shaft, the role of logistics becomes increasingly
important if production targets are to be achieved. Rails are available in different sizes
based on a weight per metre, typically 15, 22, and 30 kg/m rails are used underground.
Fish plates are the most common method of joining rails used in underground rail track.
Our fabrication process uses cold hydraulic forming and avoids the
negative weakening introduced by hot forging which results in stress
fracturing. Mines now have access to a mission critical product that
exceeds all safety and international DIN engineering standards and is
cheaper than competing products commonly used in the market.

Giving you peace of Mind

Our fishplates conform to the highest
standards and meet both international
(ISO) and local (SANS) specifications,
which have been independently
tested by the CSIR & SGS Metlab.
There standards are:
o SANS 6892-1 – Metallic Metals -
Tensile & Elongation Test
o SANS 10339 - Underground rail
track work in mines i.e. for
Maximum axle loads
o SANS 7438 – Metallic Metals –
Bend Test
o SANS 914 – Fishplate for light
rails - dimensions
o SANS 916 - Fishbolts and nuts
for light rails, in terms of
fasteners supplied
Our Quality Management System
ensures that we consistently deliver
products that meets these standards.
Fishplates for various Rails
Our fishplates cater for the light underground rail market and fit rails that
come in the following sizes; 15, 22 and 30 kg per meter.

Schematic
The design of the fishplate is such that its strength is derived in three ways, firstly
from the metallurgical properties of the metal itself, secondly from the dimensions
of the mechanical design and lastly the actual production process.
