Basic Algebra Operations

Addition and Subtraction of Algebraic Expressions

To add or subtract algebraic expressions, combine like terms. Like terms are terms that have the

same variable raised to the same power.

Example:

(3x + 4) + (2x - 5) = 3x + 2x + 4 - 5 = 5x - 1

(5y^2 - 3y + 6) - (2y^2 + 4y - 2) = 5y^2 - 2y^2 - 3y - 4y + 6 + 2 = 3y^2 - 7y + 8

Multiplication of Algebraic Expressions

To multiply algebraic expressions, use the distributive property and combine like terms.

Example:

3x * (2x + 4) = 3x * 2x + 3x * 4 = 6x^2 + 12x

(x + 2)(x - 3) = x(x - 3) + 2(x - 3) = x^2 - 3x + 2x - 6 = x^2 - x - 6

Division of Algebraic Expressions

To divide algebraic expressions, divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents of like bases.

Example:

(6x^3) / (2x) = 3x^(3-1) = 3x^2

(10y^5) / (2y^2) = 5y^(5-2) = 5y^3

Solving Linear Equations

Basic Algebra Operations

To solve linear equations, isolate the variable on one side of the equation.

Example:

2x + 3 = 7

2x = 7 - 3

2x = 4

x=4/2

x=2

Factoring Algebraic Expressions

Factoring is the process of breaking down an expression into simpler expressions (factors) that,

when multiplied together, give the original expression.

Example:

x^2 - 5x + 6 = (x - 2)(x - 3)

3x^2 - 12x = 3x(x - 4)

Exponents and Radicals

Exponents indicate repeated multiplication of a base. Radicals are the opposite, indicating the root

of a number.

Example:

x^3 = x * x * x
Basic Algebra Operations

sqrt(x) = x^(1/2)

(x^3)^2 = x^(3*2) = x^6

sqrt(x^4) = x^(4/2) = x^2
