REVISION M2

Q1 Illustrate the construction of operation process chart with the help of suitable example and
indicate its application in work study.

Operation process chart is also called as outline process chart; an operation process chart (OPC)
represents the sequence of operations to be performed on a component. It gives a bird's-eye view of
the various operations, inspections, and storage done in sequence

Application of operation process chart in work study

It is used as a tool of method study, it gives outline of a process, it tells us the principal operations
and the inspection carried out

Q2. What do you mean by flow process chart? Explain the procedure of drawing flow process chart
material type with the help of suitable example. What are its application possibilities and limitations

Flow process charts are graphic representation of the sequences of operations, transportation,
inspection, delays and storages occurring during a process and it also have information such as time
required and distance moved
It can be of three types

1) Material or product type

2) Man type
3) Machine or equipment type

Applications:

1) It helps us to record the flow of material or product, man and machine

2) It helps us develop and understanding of how a process or a work is happening

Limitations

1) We can’t observe material and man together

2) Is not much detailed
3) Doesn’t show the interaction between the different elements (man, machine, material)
Q3. What is SIMO chart? What are its advantages and limitations? Explain the procedure of making
SIMO chart with suitable example. What are its application possibilities?

Its application are possible

1) Where we require very accurate and detailed analysis

2) Removing or eliminating the unproductive Therbligs such as find, select and avoidable delay
etc.
3) Resequencing of the productive therbligs such as assemble and disassemble etc.

Q4 Differentiate between operation process chart and flow process chart.

Operation process chart is also called as outline process chart; an operation process chart (OPC)
represents the sequence of operations to be performed on a component. It gives a bird's-eye view of
the various operations, inspections, and storage done in sequence

Flow process charts are graphic representation of the sequences of operations, transportation,
inspection, delays and storages occurring during a process and it also have information such as time
required and distance moved

The flow chart contains more detail than the operation process chart. In addition to operations and
inspections, it includes transportations, storages, delays, and the times and distance involved.

Q5 Draw a suitable chart to establish a number of machines to be assigned to one operator. Also
discuss the advantages of the chart.

We have to make a multiple activity chart of man-machine type

A multiple activity chart is a form of process chart recording the related sequence of work of a
number of operators and or machines on common time scale

Man-machine chart

Man-multi machine chart

Multi man-machine chart

Multi man- multi machine chart

Multiple activity chart brings out the comparative utilisation of men and machines very clearly
The advantages of this chart are

1) Very useful for understanding the flow of the work

2) Can be used to determine the optimum mix of resources
3) Multiple activity chart brings out the comparative utilisation of men and machines very
clearly

Q6 Explain the use of THERBLIG with the help of a suitable example.

Therbligs are 18 kinds of elemental motions, used in the study of motion economy in the workplace.
A workplace task is analysed by recording each of the therblig units for a process, with the results
used for optimization of manual labour by eliminating unneeded movements.

Suppose a man goes into a bathroom and shave[s]. We'll assume that his face is all lathered and
that he is ready to pick up his razor. He knows where the razor is, but first he must locate it with
his eye. That is "search", the first Therblig. His eye finds it and comes to rest—that's "find", the
second Therblig. Third comes "select", the process of sliding the razor prior to the fourth Therblig,
"grasp". Fifth is "transport loaded", bringing the razor up to his face, and sixth is "position",
getting the razor set on his face.

Q7 Enumerate the list of therbligs in terms of effective and non-effective therbligs

Q8 Explain two hand process charts with the help of a suitable example. What are the objectives of
this chart?

- Self (lab)

Q9 What is cycle graph? What is its purpose?

Q10 Explain MEMO chart. What are its application possibilities?

Q11 What do you mean by micromotion study? Explain the procedure of making micromotion
analysis.

Q 12 What do you mean by cyclegraph and chronocyclegraph? What are their advantages and
limitations?
Cycle graph is the old method in which the light traces are continuous

Chrono cycle graph is the new method in which we use bulb which flashes with some frequency

The Chrono cycle graph is special form of cycle graph in which the light source is suitably interrupted
so that the path appears as a series of pear-shaped dots the pointed end indicating the direction of
movement and the spacing indicating the speed of movement.
