2. Read the following essay and write one sentence to summarise how the author feels a
pet is considered in a family.

For hundreds of years people have kept animals as pets, looking after them and often
trying to train them. But you must think carefully before buying or having one, because if you
have no time to feed it regularly, brush or shampoo it, train it not to bite or hurt people, you
spoil it and it will be a burden in your life. But why do people keep pets?
First of all, they think pets are useful. They can protect your house, they can be good
company, they can calm you down if you are nervous, or cheer you up when you are sad and
bored. They can sometimes protect you from danger by producing different sounds. Another
thing about pets is that they are fun and playful. Most people consider pets, especially dogs,
to be friendly and faithful. In addition to this, people feel the need to take care of pets. And
last but not least, some admit that training pets is a very difficult but pleasant activity. Some
species of dogs can be trained to guide blind people, herd sheep or track down criminals,
while others can be trained to bring different things (newspapers, glasses) to their masters.
Capuchin monkeys or chimps, for example, can be trained to help sick or disabled people.
One of the jobs they especially like to do is brushing hair. However, not everyone likes the
idea of having a pet. Some people think they do not have enough time to look after pets, to
clean up their mess, to take them for a walk, to buy them special food, or even to take them to
a vet, if necessary, if they are ill. They may also believe that pets carry numerous viruses and
that when they lick, scratch or bite you while playing, they transfer those microbes to you.
Even if they like animals, some people do not have any pets. They see pets as fun and playful
creatures, but they consider them dangerous to their health. What is more, some people
complain about pets losing their fur. They dislike the idea of seeing loose hairs floating in the
air or stuck to their clothes or other objects in the house (especially cups, plates, glasses, etc.)

To sum up everything here, one should know that a pet is a wonderful member of the
family, but it causes a lot of work: “Pets are not just for Christmas, they are for life.”

and two against having pets in the house.
