1.4 General Description
The BARRETT 2075 is a solid-state linear amplifier system operating from 2MHz to 30MHz at a power output
level adjustable between 300 Watts and 1000 Watts PEP.
Extensive self-test, system monitoring, and protection circuits are provided, with status and tuning information
being displayed on a large Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel.
The exciter for the 2075 linear amplifier is a Barrett 2050 transceiver equipped with the continuous FEC duty
cycle top heat sink cover, set to “Linear Amplifier” as antenna type, where its power output is reduced to
between 50 and 80W PEP. The ALC voltage for the exciter is derived at the Linear Amplifier’s output, and is
passed to the exciter via the Linear Interface Unit.
The Linear Interface Unit is designed to allow plug and play integration with three types of Linear Amplifier, (the
2075, the TW100D and the TW500D), the 2050 exciter and also to a RAT1000 1KW Automatic Antenna Tuner.
The Barrett 2075 Power Supply Unit provides the +48 Volts required by the power amplifier stage transistors,
as well as all required control voltages for the Linear Amplifier.
4
Section 2 Installation and setup
2.1 Safety
The proper, safe installation of the BARRETT 2075 solid-state Linear Amplifier is not difficult to accomplish if
the following guidelines are followed:-
Caution!
Lethal AC and RF voltages are present within the cabinets of the BARRETT 2075 solid-state Linear
Amplifiers and the Barrett 2075 Power Supply Unit.
All electrical work should be undertaken by a suitably qualified person and in accordance with local
bylaws.
Use extreme caution when opening the cabinet(s) to perform any alignment or adjustment steps, and
take particular care to inspect interconnection cables frequently to ensure that they are in good
condition.
The Linear Amplifier units are heavy! Proper lifting techniques are recommended when installing the
Power amplifier and power supply units.
The new 2075 system is shipped with the Linear Amplifier and Power Supply (Where applicable) removed from
the rack. All other units are fitted and factory adjusted for optimum operation. All vacant slots are covered and
the 2RU panels fitted below the positions of the Linear Amplifier and PSU (where applicable) are plastic
covered to offer protection during the insertion of the heavy units. The plastic may be removed at the
completion of the installation.
The following major aspects should be considered when installing a land based station grounding system:
Rack and equipment ground with respect to the mains supply and personal safety is paramount. The
installation of all electrical equipment should be in accordance to local bylaws, and grounding is a requirement
for effective earth leakage protection.
5
Grounding with respect to EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference): Due to the high RF fields in the proximity of the
transmitter rack, shielding of all equipment and cables is important. The supplied system rack and cables has
been adequately shielded and the ground point for external connection can be found where all of the individual
ground wires come together at the rear bottom of the rack. The rack earth connection should be extended, as
directly as possible, to a suitable ground, outside of the building, using preferably, a 50mm copper earth strap.
All signal cables should be shielded and grounded at each end.
Lightning protection also requires a good ground connection and should be similarly connected to the building
ground. The lightning protection should ideally be located where the coaxial cables enter the building, and
coupled directly to ground as directly as possible.
When an unbalanced antenna or an ATU is used, the antenna ground, or counterpoise is vitally important.
Providing an adequate counterpoise at ground level is difficult, but it is far more difficult when the ATU is
placed on a roof top. At ground level, the use of 8 to 12 radial wires of 16 gauge or larger, each of about 1/3
longer than the length of the antenna, buried to about 150mm below the surface should be adequate. (Radial
earth mat / ground plane: Barrett P/N BCA20026) Connection to metal water pipes can also improve the
ground. On a roof top, there is usually not enough space for an adequate counterpoise. An effective
counterpoise may be achieved by covering the entire roof surface below the antenna with wire mesh which is
then connected to the ground as directly as possible. It must be noted however, that the successful tuning of
the ATU and the resulting VSWR performance of the antenna, will greatly depend on the effectiveness of the
counterpoise provided.
Metal hulled vessels provide an almost perfect ground. The tuner ground terminal should be connected
directly to the hull using the shortest possible ground strap. The point of connection to the hull should be
prepared so that it is free of paint and rust to ensure a good contact area with minimum electrical resistance.
Wooden or fibreglass vessels present more of a problem to ground. Ideally the vessel should be fitted with an
external copper ground sheet, connected to the interior of the vessel by suitable stud or an earth plate ("E"
plate Barrett P/N BCA91700)
If the vessel is yet to be constructed, then in the case of fibreglass vessels a thin copper sheet with an area of
not less than 4 square metres should be moulded into the hull during lamination. A suitable heavy strap should
be connected to the sheet and left free for earth connection.
Should neither of these methods be available it will be necessary to bond as many large metallic objects, such
as the engine and propeller shaft, together to form a ground.
Whichever method is used the ground run from the ground system to the antenna tuner should be as short as
possible and use copper strap at least 50mm wide (wider if available).
Corrosion
All connections in marine situations are subject to corrosion and oxidation. To minimise this, all joints should
be cleaned and have silicon grease applied before assembly. Under severe conditions joints should be
protected with self vulcanising rubber tape. Consideration must always be given to the problem of electrolysis.
Severe structural damage may occur if electrolysis is present.
We suggest that for high power transmitters, a type RG- 213 or better cable is used for all coaxial feeds
beyond the Linear Amplifier. For improved coaxial feeder performance over long runs, we suggest the use of a
low loss coaxial cable. Our Technical Services department can assist with cable selection if required. The use
of a lightning protection module is recommended.
6
2.6 Fitting the Linear Amplifier
Unpack the Linear Amplifier and Power Supply (where applicable). In all cases, the Linear Amplifier fits into
the upper vacant slot in the rack and the Power Supply in the lower. Unless otherwise specified for special
project requirements, all cabling with the exception of the coaxial RF output cable, are installed in the rack and
so identification and connection is simple. (See system drawings for each system type)
Both the 2075 Linear Amplifier and the 2075 Power Supply Units have been factory adjusted for optimum
performance. If any further adjustment is necessary, all adjustment and technical information is available in
the technical manual for the 2075 type unit. Please see the proprietary manuals for TW500D and TW1000D
units respectively.
Please refer to the 2050 operating and installation manual for comprehensive details on operating the unit. A
technical manual is available through the Barrett Communications Service department for the 2050.
The rear Auxiliary connector of the 2050 Exciter has a “T” cable fitted for integration into the 2075 system and
to allow for external interface as may be required in the system installation. Detail of this connector is as

2.9 System Description
Each type of Linear Amplifier type has specific rated specifications which are detailed separately; however the
control and RF path through each system type is similar:
The 2050 Exciter radio produces a serial data Low Pass Filter (LPF) selection criterion which is processed in
the 2075 Linear Interface Unit, depending on the type of Linear Amplifier selected and if an ATU is present.
For the Barrett 2075 Linear Amplifier, the serial data is clocked out to the LPF Interface PCB in the Linear
Amplifier where the serial to parallel conversion is done.
For the TW1000D or TW500D Linear Amplifiers, the serial data from the Exciter radio is converted into parallel
filter selection and tune signals required by the Linear Amplifier.
Where the RAT1000 ATU is employed, the serial data is converted into RS-232 V24 levels before being
filtered and sent via the long cables to the ATU interface located near the ATU at the base of the antenna. The
Tuned, Clock and Strobe signals are also RS-232 V24 converted for the transfer to the ATU Interface.
The RF signal at the antenna is bypassed through the Linear Amplifier and on to the Exciter antenna 1
connection. The Exciter is a fully equipped transceiver and the demodulated audio is available at the system
front panel or through the rear auxiliary connector via the “T” cable. (See notes above). Receiver control is no
different to a standard 2050 base station. Please refer to the 2050 Operating and Installation manual for
further information on the 2050 receiver functions.
The 2050 transceiver, when setup to work as an Exciter for a Linear Amplifier, (see the above 2050 setup
notes), will produce between 50W and 80W excitation power to the Linear Amplifier. The PTT signal from the
Exciter is passed via the linear interface to the Linear Amplifier where it is used to change the mode of the
Linear Amplifier to “Transmit”. The Linear Amplifier then routs the RF signal through the power amplifier
stages, through the Low Pass Filters (LPF), the ALC detection circuit, and out to the antenna connection. The
ALC voltage produced in the Linear Amplifier is passed back to the Exciter via the linear interface unit. The
ALC voltage is used to monitor the VSWR condition of the load and consequently to reduce the output power
of the Exciter, in the event of a fault condition. For further technical information of the 2050 radio, please refer
to the 2050 technical manual. Technical details for each type of Linear Amplifier appear later in this manual.
The Barrett 2050 125 W PEP continuous FEC duty cycle HF transceiver / Exciter radio Barrett P/N BC205010,
is equipped with sufficient cooling for 100% duty cycle FEC data operation.
16
2.10 Remote Control
The Barrett 2075 High Power Transceiver System can be remoted in a number of ways depending on the
distance to be remoted, the location of the radio equipment and the infrastructure available.
A simple remote control can be achieved by removing the front panel of the 2050 Exciter radio and extending
the cable to up to 150M using a CAT5 shielded cable.
For distances greater than 150M and where split site equipment distribution is required (i.e. Transmitter site,
Receiver site and Control site), we recommend the use of the Barrett 2076 Remote Control Interface. Please
refer to the 2076 Remote Control Interface Operator and Installation manual for further details.
Alternative remote control options may be used, which can be designed specifically for unique requirements.
System design and technical assistance is available through our Technical Services Department.
17
Section 3 Setting into operation
Please note that there are some important settings which should be checked prior to keying the system for the
first time:
The 2050 Exciter radio, “Antenna Type” selected within the “I/O Settings” menu of the “Protected
Menu”, must be set to “Linear Amplifier” or “Linear with ATU” (where the Automatic Antenna Tuner
[ATU] is used)
The 2050 Exciter radio must be programmed with appropriate frequencies and operating parameters
including power setting. Please Note:- The power should be set to “High Power” if 1000W is expected
at the output power of the Linear Amplifier.
Scroll through the programmed frequencies and listen for the distinct relay changes within the Linear
Amplifier as the correct LPF is selected. If a 2075 Linear Amplifier is used, note the LPF filter range
selected at the front right bottom corner of the Linear Amplifier’s display.
As you scroll through the frequencies, take note that the Linear Amplifier indicates “OPPERATE” at the
Linear Amplifier display’s bottom left, for each frequency. If “OPERATE” is not indicated, use a thin
probe to press the button, second from the left, behind the metal display shroud. Pressing the button
will toggle the state of the “OPERATE” indication. The setting will be stored automatically.
Receiver checks can now be performed. The receiver is identical in operation and function to a stand alone
2050 base station radio. Please refer to the 2050 Operating and Installation manual for further information on
the 2050 receiver functions. The Linear Amplifier, in bypass mode or on fail state, will pass the receive RF
signal directly through to the 2050 Exciter receiver.
Only once the above has been programmed and checked, can you proceed to do Transmitter checks.
In SSB mode, the transmitter will only produce power when modulation is present. The power output of the
Linear Amplifier is rated as PEP (Peak Effective Power). Accurately measurement of PEP power and VSWR
requires specialised test equipment. The use of external calibrated test equipment is preferable but the front
panel of the 2075 Linear Amplifier does have a digital representation of the forward power and VSWR at the
right hand side of the display when keyed. The TW500D and TW1000D type Linear Amplifiers have analogue
forward/reverse power meters which are not highly accurate but are indicative of the power and antenna
conditions.
The Linear Amplifiers are not tolerant of loads with VSWR figure greater than 2:1. The antenna and feeders
need to be in good condition, and where an ATU is fitted, the antenna and counterpoise must be adequate.
The performance of the system relies entirely on the condition of the antenna.
A simple test to prove transmitter performance is to use the “Tune” function of the Exciter:
Press and hold the “Tune” button on the front panel of the 2050 Exciter radio.
Note the forward power and VSWR as indicated on the front panel of the 2075 Linear Amplifier, or on the
analogue power meters on the TW500D/TW1000D Linear Amplifier.
This should be done on each of the programmed frequencies.
If an ATU is fitted and the “Tune” button is pressed, the system will invoke a tune cycle. Once the ATU has
attained a tune pass, additional “Tune” button pressing will produce the same results as above.
18
If Selcall is enabled, send a Selcall to ensure the correct modulation to achieve full output PEP power
indication.
Please Note:- If you are using an external through-line power meter to measure the RF power out of the 2050
Exciter radio, the radio has been set to “Linear Amplifier” or “Linear with ATU” (where the Automatic Antenna
Tuner [ATU] is used) in the “Antenna Type” menu of “I/O Settings” within the “Protected Menu”. In this mode,
the radio will NOT produce 125W output power. You can expect between 50W and 80W present at the
antenna 1 output, when the “Tune” button is pressed.

2075 LINEAR INTERFACE UNIT BLOCK DIAGRAM
Serial data, clock and strobe signals are generated in the Exciter radio and processed before being passed on
to the Linear Amplifier and ATU, where employed:
For the Barrett 2075 Linear Amplifier, the serial data is clocked out to the LPF interface in the Linear Amplifier
where the serial to parallel conversion is done.
For the TW1000D or TW500D Linear Amplifiers, the serial data from the Exciter radio is converted into parallel
filter selection and tune signals required by the Linear Amplifier.
Where the RAT1000 ATU is employed, the serial data is converted into RS-232 V24 levels before being filtered
and sent via the long cables to the ATU interface located near the ATU at the base of the antenna. The
Tuned, Clock and Strobe signals are also RS-232 V24 converted for the transfer to the ATU Interface.
All other signals pass unaltered through the Linear Amplifier Interface unit to the Linear Amplifier.
26
5.3 Circuit Description
The Exciter produces a stream of data representing LPF filter selection, which is passed as “Data0” to U2 a
serial to parallel converter. Data shift is synchronised by a “Clock” signal also originating in the Exciter. The
“Strobe” signal from the Exciter initiates the parallel output from U2 through the driver U3 to J2. Also, included
in the serial data, is the “TUNE” signal required by the TW1000D or TW500D type Linear Amplifier which may
be connected to J2. When J2 is connected to an Amplifier, The ALC, PTT and Fault signals are connected
directly to J1, the Exciter connector.
When a 2075 Linear Amplifier is connected to the Linear Interface, Data1, output from U2 is extended to J3,
together with the Strobe, Clock, ALC, PTT and Fault signals.
When an ATU is connected to the Linear Interface at J4, control Data2 derived from Data1, output from U3, is
passed via RS-232 converter U4 to connector J4. The Clock signal is similarly converted to RS-232 in U4 and
presented to J4. The TTL Strobe and Tuned signals are RS-232/ V24 converted in U5 and connected to J4.
The internal 24V ATU Switch Mode Power Supply is exclusively used to power an ATU via the ATU control
cable.

Section 6 ATU Interface Unit – BCA207511
6.1 Specifications
Weight 2.1 kg
6.2 Overview
The ATU Interface Unit is designed to operate in conjunction with the 2075 Linear Interface Unit. Please see
the documentation and typical system drawing in the Linear Interface Unit section of this manual.
The function of the 2075 ATU Interface Unit is to provide connection isolation and data interface between the
1KW ATU and the 2075 Linear Amplifier System. Isolation is important due to the high RF fields present in
and around the ATU.
Serial data, clock and strobe signals are generated in the Exciter radio, processed in the Linear Interface Unit,
and then passed on to ATU via the ATU Interface unit.
The Exciter, when selected to Antenna Type, “Linear with ATU”, in the I/O Settings field of the Protected Menu,
will output a data string when a tune is required. This data it directed to a memory slot in the ATU and contains
frequency information which is used as a reference for future tunes to the same frequencies.
32
ATU control signals are also converted from serial data to parallel for Tune Initialisation and Check Tune
functions.
The Tuned signal from the ATU indicates to the Exciter, that the tune cycle has completed successfully.
The ATU Interface Unit provides the RS-232/V24 conversion required to match the data protocol of the 2050
Exciter radio and the RAT1000 ATU.
