POSTNATAL WARD: Tasks and Subtasks 2024/2025
1. Task: Patient Handover and Communication
o Subtasks: Conduct shift handover and receive patient updates. Receive and review handover reports from the morning shift. Receive and review handover reports from the evening shift. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team during rounds. Communicate any changes in patient status to the physician. Communicate patient status to the on-call physician as needed. Educate family members about patient status and care plans. Prepare for morning shift handover by updating reports. Communicate effectively with the healthcare team. 2. Task: Patient Assessment and Monitoring o Subtasks: Perform initial head-to-toe assessments of mother and baby. Conduct patient assessments at the start of the shift. Monitor and document vital signs of mother and baby regularly. Monitor for any signs of postpartum complications. Respond to any patient alarms or emergencies. Monitor for signs of neonatal distress. Perform routine checks on newborns (e.g., APGAR scores, jaundice screening). Perform patient safety checks. 3. Task: Medication Administration and Management o Subtasks: Administer medications to the mother as per prescription. Administer medications to the newborn as per prescription. Manage IV fluids for the mother if required. Assist in procedures such as epidural or spinal anesthesia management. Administer vaccinations to the newborn as scheduled. Assist with pain management for the mother. 4. Task: Patient Care and Hygiene o Subtasks: Conduct daily hygiene care for the mother. Assist with newborn care (e.g., bathing, diaper changes). Ensure the mother is comfortable and assist with repositioning. Assist mothers with breastfeeding and feeding if necessary. Change dressings on any postpartum wounds or surgical incisions.
