 Dividing Decimals
 Word Problems
UNITS:
LECTURES:
DATE OF DELIVERY:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this lesson, students will learn to
 Identify and correctly place decimals to the hundredths place on a number line.
 Demonstrate the ability to add and subtract decimals up to the hundredths place.
 Multiply decimals by whole numbers.
 Divide decimals by whole numbers.
 Analyze and solve real-world word problems involving decimals.

STUDENTS LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to
 Perform decimal operations accurately.
 Apply their understanding of decimal operations to solve real-world problems.

RESOURCE MATERIALS:
 Whiteboard
 Marker and duster
 Textbook and workbook 4B
 Worksheet
For activity
 Index cards or small pieces of paper
 Markers
REQUISTES/LINKAGE WITH PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:
 Building on their knowledge of whole numbers and place value, students extend their
understanding to decimals. They recall that the decimal point separates the whole number
part from the fractional part, and they can relate the place value of decimals to the place
value of whole numbers.
 Recall the connection between decimals and fractions learned in the previous chapter.
Review place value concepts and emphasize their importance in decimal operations.
 Students recall and apply the rules for adding and subtracting whole numbers. They extend
this knowledge to decimals by aligning the decimal points and performing the operations
just as they did with whole numbers, understanding that the place value plays a crucial role
in these operations.

METHODOLOGY:
1. Introduction:
 Briefly review the concept of decimals and their place value.
 Discuss why decimal operations are essential in everyday life.
 Provide concrete examples that highlight the significance of the decimal point in
separating whole numbers from fractional parts. (e.g., measuring ingredients for a recipe).

2. Adding and Subtracting Decimals:

 Begin with the concept of addition and subtraction.
 Provide clear examples of adding and subtracting decimals.
 Demonstrate the importance of aligning decimals when performing these operations.
 Conduct guided practice with the class.
 Use real-life scenarios to show why and how decimals are added or subtracted (e.g.,
measuring ingredients for a recipe).

3. Multiplying Decimals:
 Introduce the concept of multiplying decimals by whole numbers and decimals.
 Building on their understanding of multiplication with whole numbers, students
recognize that multiplying decimals involves considering place value. They recall that the
product of a whole number and a decimal is smaller than the whole number, and they
apply this concept to decimal multiplication.
 Introduce the concept of "multiplying by powers of 10" to help students grasp the effect
on the decimal point.
 Work through examples as a class and provide practice problems.
4. Dividing Decimals:
 Students extend their knowledge of division from whole numbers to decimals. They
recall that division is the process of sharing or distributing a quantity into equal parts, and
they apply this concept to decimals, recognizing the role of place value in the quotient.
 Explain the steps involved in dividing decimals, emphasizing the importance of
precision.
 Work through examples as a class and provide practice problems.

5. Word Problems with Decimal Operations:

 Students apply their skills in solving word problems involving whole numbers to
decimals. They understand that real-world situations may involve quantities that are not
whole numbers but rather decimals, and they use their knowledge of operations to
translate and solve these problems.
 Present real-world scenarios that require the application of decimals (e.g., shopping,
measurements, or financial transactions).
 Provide a variety of word problems that involve adding, subtracting, multiplying, and
dividing decimals.
 Guide students in identifying key information, translating it into a mathematical
expression, and choosing the appropriate operation.
 Encourage students to identify key information, choose the appropriate operation, and
solve the problems.

BRIDGE:
 Relate this chapter with the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of
whole numbers and with decimals.
 Relate the current lesson to the previous chapter on decimals, emphasizing how
understanding decimal operations expands their mathematical toolkit.

ACTIVITY:
DECIMAL SHOPPING FAIR:
Procedure:
1. Stall Preparation:
 Half of the students will be responsible for creating imaginary stalls.
 Each student/group will be given index cards to create their stalls.
 On each card, write the name of an imaginary object and its price using decimals (e.g.,
2.50, 1.75).
 Decorate the cards to make them visually appealing.
 Set up the stalls in the classroom.

2. Shopping:
 The other half of the students will be shoppers.
 Instruct them to visit each stall and choose one item from each stall to "purchase" using
their imaginary money.
 They must record the name and price of each item on their Decimal Shopping List.

3. Shopping List Creation:

 After completing their shopping, students will add up the total cost of their purchases.
 They will create a Decimal Shopping List by organizing the items they "bought" and
their corresponding prices.
 Emphasize the use of decimals in recording the prices accurately.

4. Sharing and Discussion:

 Once everyone has completed their shopping lists, encourage students to share their
lists with a partner or in small groups.
 Facilitate a class discussion about the different combinations of items purchased and
the total cost.

5. Reflection:
o Have students reflect on the activity by discussing what they learned about
decimals through this hands-on experience.
o Ask questions such as:
 How did you decide which items to purchase?
 What strategies did you use to add up the total cost?
 Did you encounter any challenges while shopping?

CONCLUSION:
 Summarize the key concepts of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals,
highlighting their relevance in solving real-world problems.
