MATHEMATICS NOTES - SETS Part 1

The document discusses sets and Venn diagrams. It defines what a set is and provides examples of different set operations like union, intersection and complement. It also explains how to find the number of subsets and provides examples of Venn diagrams showing different logical relationships between sets.

Sets
A SET is a general name for any collection of distinct elements, which is enclosed by a pair of
curly brackets ( { } )

or E : Universal Set
: Union
: Intersection
{ } : Null Set or Empty Set (has no elements)
: Number of Elements in Set A
: Complement of A or A Complement
: Belongs to or is a member of
: Does NOT belong to or is NOT a member of
: Subset
Universal Set - All the elements under consideration
Intersection - Elements common to all the sets under consideration

Union - All the elements found in the sets under consideration

Complement - Complement A or ( A’ ) is the set of elements in the universal set which

is NOT in set A

Union of Two Sets:

n(AUB) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A∩B)
Intersection of Two Sets:
n(A∩B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(AUB)
Number of Subsets = 2 n * Where ‘n’ is the number of elements

E.g. If A = { 1, 2, 3, 4 } , find 2 n

No. of subsets in A = 2 n
= 24
= 16
Venn Diagrams
A Venn diagram is a schematic representation of the elements in a set or a group. It is a diagram that shows all the possible
logical relationships between different sets or groups.
