CUFEM 510 Assignment 1
CUFEM 510 Assignment 1
Question 1
a. Differentiate between Energy audit and Energy management. [6]
b. Case study
PPC is a company which specialises in cement production in Zimbabwe. The cement production process
is energy intensive and the company requires to reduce their energy consumption. Fuels and energy
students have been tasked to conduct an Energy Audit and provide possible solutions for reducing the
company’s energy consumption.

Step 10
i. The students decide to use the 10-step methodology for a Detailed Audit. Copy and complete
Table Q1. [10]
ii. Explain how benchmarking can be used to help in monitoring the energy consumption of the
plant. [4]
iii. The company uses electrostatic precipitators (EPs) as a dust suppression system. Give another
energy conserving technology which can be used besides the EPs to suppress the dust and
explain how its operation differs from the EPs in terms of energy consumption. [8]
iv. Given that the team identified the rotary kiln as one area suffering from high radiative heat
losses, up to 300 ℃ is radiated from the kiln’s walls. Discuss how heat recovery at the kiln can
be done to produce electricity, Hint: use organic Rankine cycle. [10]
v. The company has a lot of motors which run at the same time, what effect does this have on the
electric bill and how can it be corrected. [2]
Question 2
a. Consider the following inverted block rate structure for a monthly bill:
Customer charge RTGS 250/month
Demand charge RTGS 10/kW/month
Energy charge 0 – 25 000 kWh RTGS 0.08/kWh
25 000 – 100 000 RTGS 0.09/kWh
Over 100 000 kWh RTGS 0.12/kWh
Assume that a facility uses a total of 200 kW and 86,400 kWh for one month for all energy loads. How
many dollars would they save per month from a lighting upgrade resulting in 25 kW lighting power
reduction if the lighting system operates 300 hours per month and operates during the peak demand
period? [6]
b. What does Coefficient of Performance (COP) mean in HVAC systems. [2]
c. A 250-ton chiller has COP of 4.2. If the chiller is running at full capacity, what is the load (in kW) of
the chiller? [3]
d. Reheat may still be needed in an HVAC system even if the outside temperature is very high. Discuss.
[6]
e. Consider a process that requires 10,000 MMBtu/year and this energy is supplied by an old, oil-fired
boiler (uses residual fuel oil #6) that is only 50% efficient. You retrofit to a natural gas fired boiler that
is 80% efficient, what are the energy savings? [3]
Question 3
a. A facility purchases and installs a new chiller for $100,000. Determine the annual savings is
required to return 15% on this investment if the chiller lasts 10 years [8]
b. Table Q3 shows data collected by a Fuels and Energy student at the CUT - block leak factory. Plot a
graph of energy consumption vs production for the collected data. Determine the equation that describes
the least squares regression line. Hence or otherwise comment on the relationship between x and y.

c. In a 100 TPD Sponge Iron plant shown in Figure Q3, the sponge iron is fed to the Induction melting
furnace, producing molten steel at 88% yield. The Energy consumption details are as follows:
• Coal Consumption: 130 TPD
• Specific Energy consumption for Kiln producing Sponge Iron: 120 kWh / ton sponge iron
