CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

In emergency situations, communication serves as a crucial component of patient care.

According to Ahmadi and Kiani 2019, communication is the cornerstone of every human society,
which sustains social life. It is important nursing practice aspect. Moreover, from The Hipa Journal
Communication in Nursing, nursing students need to develop their communication skills such as
listening, peer support, ethical sensitivity, emotional intelligence, and conflict management. And
in order to improve the patient outcomes, these skills are essential for effective communication
with patients and other members of healthcare provider.

Additionally, nurses and other healthcare providers are crucial to the care of patients as
they engage in continuous communication with patients, nursing colleagues, physicians, and other
healthcare disciplines. According to a poll conducted for the 2020 Nursing Communication Skills
Training study, previous program participants felt that their perception of team communication
was enhanced when listening skills and emotional intelligence ideas were combined. During
pandemic, to ensure that teams work well together, nurses and healthcare provider must receive
training in communication and resolution techniques.

Therefore, it is essential for nursing students in University of Baguio to start develop and
practice different kinds of communication styles to ensure equipped and high-quality nursing care
and overall well-being.

International Literature

A study entitled Improving Communication and Collaboration Skills in Graduate Nurses:

An Evidence-based Approach (May, 2022) this study was published January 2020, it conducted a
systematic review of the literature on communication skills training for nursing student. This
research aimed to identify the characteristics, outcomes, and quality of the training programs and
to provide recommendations for future research and practice. Also it included 25 articles that met
the inclusion criteria and analyzed them using the Kirkpatrick model of evaluation. Moreover, the
study found that communication skills training for nursing student has positive impact and effect
on their attitudes, knowledge, behaviors, and skills as well as on the satisfaction of patient and
clinical outcomes. Furthermore, they also identified gaps and limitations in the literature, such as
the lack of long term follow-up, the heterogeneity of the interventions and outcomes, and the low
quality of some studies.

A scoping review conducted by International BMC Nursing a global study, faculty of

Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Canada (2020), found that nonverbal communication is an
integral part of nurse-patient relationships. The review highlighted haptics, kinesics, proxemics,
and vocalic as the most frequently used nonverbal communication techniques by nurses when
communicating with older adults. The study also revealed that nurses should be self-aware of their
nonverbal communication behaviors with older adults and understand its modification as necessary
in accordance with patient’s needs.

Additional global study published in Nursing Standard (2022) emphasized the importance
of effective communication skills in nursing practice. The article focused on core communication
skills, their definitions, and the positive outcomes that result when applied to practice.

National Literature

A study from Nurse Media Journal of Nursing College of Nursing in West Visayas State
University (2020) states that this study has shown that various factors influence student’s success
in nursing school and the Nurse Licensure Examination. Such factors should be studied as
foundations of the nursing programs. Problems with proficiency in the language used by the
instructor to teach curricular courses may be considered a barrier to effective learning and
academic success. Findings showed that there were significant correlations between academic
performance and the Verbal Ability subscale of the Nursing Aptitude Test and the three English
courses included in the nursing curriculum (p=0.000). There were also significant correlations
between the NLE ratings and Verbal Ability (p=0.000) and the three English courses (p=0.000).

From Sage Journals (March 2022) The study focuses on unraveling the factors influencing
nonverbal communication between nurses and hospitalized older adults, aiming to address
communication issues and enhance nursing care. Emphasizing the significance of understanding
both intrinsic and other related factors affecting nurses' nonverbal communication with this
demographic, the research underscores the importance of incorporating these insights into training
materials for nurses. By identifying and addressing impediments to effective nonverbal
communication, the study seeks to contribute to the improvement of overall nursing care for
hospitalized older adults. This includes debunking all religious and cultural beliefs as well as
negative stereotypes that the nurses may have about hospitalized older adults through education of
nurses and the public to enhance the older adults care in Cameroon and Sub-Saharan Africa. Nurses
should be assisted to know and appreciate the value of their nonverbal communication when
dealing with all patients irrespective of their financial status.

Furthemore, a research study in Journal of Clinical Nursing (2019), the topic was about to
understand the interprofessional and intraprofessional communication patterns of overseas
qualified nurses as they coordinate care for patients in Australian hospitals. Analysis of the
discourse patterns demonstrated that effectiveness of interactions was affected by hesitancy, lack
of assertion and few strategies to manage inadequate or aggressive communication by other team
members. The linguistic evidence from this study shows variations in communication competency
between participants, which emphasises the importance of not viewing overseas qualified nurses’
communication training needs as homogenous. With the growing multicultural nature of
healthcare teams, this study underscores the need for intercultural communication training for team
integration and patient safety.

Local Literature

A research study entitled Communication Skills of Nursing Students written by Dorothy

Afriyie (2020) The study was conducted by researchers from the University of the Philippines
Baguio and the University of the Cordilleras. It highlighted that the ability of the nurse to describe
concepts in an exploratory way is an important means to demonstrate evidence base in practice.
effective communication is an ultimate determinant of success for a nurse. Effective
communication was defined as a mutual agreement and satisfaction of care for both patients and
nurses. It has been linked to precede the achievement of concordance in patients, and in nurses, it
influences clinical reasoning and the nursing process.
In conclusion, verbal and nonverbal communication skills are essential for nursing students
to develop. These skills can improve patient outcomes and satisfaction, and help nurses provide
high-quality care. It is important for nursing students to be aware of the different communication
techniques and their applications in nursing practice.
CHAPTER 2

Population and the Locale of the Study

The population of the Nursing Students in University of Baguio is _ and only _ nursing
was considered a target audience of this study.

The inclusion criteria for this research study are the following: nursing student of
University of Baguio, this was under the recommendation and approval of the University. The
students should be currently enrolled under the Academic Year 2023-2024.

An inclusion criterion for this study must be all nursing students. Exclusion criteria might
be students not enrolled in nursing course.

A total enumeration will be utilized as a sampling method in which the _ students were
chosen as samples for the actual study, as long as they fit the criteria. The actual number of learners
were known upon data gathering when all nursing students identified. The study was only
conducted inside the school premises, in the University of Baguio 2023-2024.

The researchers chose this topic to give recommendations and provide high-quality,
empathetic care to future nurses at the university.
