Chapter 1-2 Communication Skills Practiced in UB Nursing Students
Additionally, nurses and other healthcare providers are crucial to the care of patients as
they engage in continuous communication with patients, nursing colleagues, physicians, and other
healthcare disciplines. According to a poll conducted for the 2020 Nursing Communication Skills
Training study, previous program participants felt that their perception of team communication
was enhanced when listening skills and emotional intelligence ideas were combined. During
pandemic, to ensure that teams work well together, nurses and healthcare provider must receive
training in communication and resolution techniques.
Therefore, it is essential for nursing students in University of Baguio to start develop and
practice different kinds of communication styles to ensure equipped and high-quality nursing care
and overall well-being.
International Literature
Additional global study published in Nursing Standard (2022) emphasized the importance
of effective communication skills in nursing practice. The article focused on core communication
skills, their definitions, and the positive outcomes that result when applied to practice.
National Literature
A study from Nurse Media Journal of Nursing College of Nursing in West Visayas State
University (2020) states that this study has shown that various factors influence student’s success
in nursing school and the Nurse Licensure Examination. Such factors should be studied as
foundations of the nursing programs. Problems with proficiency in the language used by the
instructor to teach curricular courses may be considered a barrier to effective learning and
academic success. Findings showed that there were significant correlations between academic
performance and the Verbal Ability subscale of the Nursing Aptitude Test and the three English
courses included in the nursing curriculum (p=0.000). There were also significant correlations
between the NLE ratings and Verbal Ability (p=0.000) and the three English courses (p=0.000).
From Sage Journals (March 2022) The study focuses on unraveling the factors influencing
nonverbal communication between nurses and hospitalized older adults, aiming to address
communication issues and enhance nursing care. Emphasizing the significance of understanding
both intrinsic and other related factors affecting nurses' nonverbal communication with this
demographic, the research underscores the importance of incorporating these insights into training
materials for nurses. By identifying and addressing impediments to effective nonverbal
communication, the study seeks to contribute to the improvement of overall nursing care for
hospitalized older adults. This includes debunking all religious and cultural beliefs as well as
negative stereotypes that the nurses may have about hospitalized older adults through education of
nurses and the public to enhance the older adults care in Cameroon and Sub-Saharan Africa. Nurses
should be assisted to know and appreciate the value of their nonverbal communication when
dealing with all patients irrespective of their financial status.
Furthemore, a research study in Journal of Clinical Nursing (2019), the topic was about to
understand the interprofessional and intraprofessional communication patterns of overseas
qualified nurses as they coordinate care for patients in Australian hospitals. Analysis of the
discourse patterns demonstrated that effectiveness of interactions was affected by hesitancy, lack
of assertion and few strategies to manage inadequate or aggressive communication by other team
members. The linguistic evidence from this study shows variations in communication competency
between participants, which emphasises the importance of not viewing overseas qualified nurses’
communication training needs as homogenous. With the growing multicultural nature of
healthcare teams, this study underscores the need for intercultural communication training for team
integration and patient safety.
