Project Proposal

Homelessness remains a problem persisting in a multitude of places, causing hardships

for many individuals across communities and society as a whole. Though many efforts have been

made to help battle this issue, homelessness continues to test advocates and policymakers alike.

At its core homelessness isn’t just someone lacking shelter, there are many contributing factors

to homelessness like economic instability, housing affordability, mental health issues, drug

abuse, and family issues that present conflicts for many individuals. Understanding this concern

requires a step back to really observe all the issues presented with this topic. Ultimately

homelessness is a huge social issue driven by economic instability, inadequate access to housing,

healthcare access, and other stigmas.

The purpose of this paper is to help others analyze the causes of homelessness and the

consequences that stem from these causes to ultimately provide insight of potential solutions

connected to homelessness. Using different perspectives to achieve this including social,

economical, political, and psychological reasons to prove the depth that homelessness actually

has and to educate and inspire others on this pressing social issue, so others can implicate change

into their own communities.

The audience for this paper is mainly the general population of the state of Washington

due to me living here, however this issue can be taught anywhere homelessness exists which

nowadays is very prevalent in most states some more than others. Within the state of Washinton

there are government officials, advocate groups, community leaders, researchers and scholars, as

well as the general public. These groups are all responsible for the betterment of helping resolve

this issue. By targeting these groups its allowing for each group to take action in there on

specialty, government officials can help impact this issue by implementing policies for change

related to housing and healthcare due to their power to make changes through law. Advocate

groups help combat homelessness by providing volunteer work at shelters or other community

related events for helping the homeless. Researchers and scholars are able to gather research as

to what is causing homelessness in area and can come up with data to help create an

understanding for why homeless are becoming homeless in the first place. Community leaders

can help by gathering resources and hosting events to help the homeless whether that is helping

serve a warm meal or donate clothes to those during the cold months. Lastly the general public

may not be directly involved with homeless related issue however that doesn’t mean they can’t

learn or support initiatives to address homelessness in their communities.

The value that can be gained from addressing homelessness for a community extends

beyond just lending a helping hand to an individual. Homelessness has an effect on the image of

society so by creating solutions to homelessness in your community it will bring social bonds

within the community and ultimately strengthen the members of your community. Along with

that homelessness brings hardships economically so by addressing this issue and emphasizing the

strain on housing costs, healthcare, as well as increasing the workforce it can lead to a reduction

in unemployment and help stimulate the economy. Homelessness also bring in a lot of crime,

violence, and drug abuse so by bringing this issue to light we are able to explain the involvement

that homeless have on drugs and crime in hopes of reducing crime rates as well as drug abuse in

communities. Homelessness can be promoted to benefit communities by talking about these

issues and recognizing the value and impact that these issues present.

Addressing homelessness is an issue that requires many perspectives to fully

comprehend, this paper has demonstrated that the purpose for understanding homelessness is to

acknowledge the multiple different factors that go into homelessness as well as understanding

homelessness at its core. The value that will come from grasping homelessness as a topic will

bring the audience and communities together in hopes to build a future where homelessness is

not just managed but completely eradicated creating a better community and world for all.
