Course : Certificate in Information Technology

Module Code : Unit_04

Module : Network Technology

Tutorials aim to discuss matters arising from lectures, work not covered in lectures, essays
or other tasks that have been set or some aspect of the readings. Tutorials are generally
led by a tutor. As such, the following work is to be discussed and explored either physically
or via online means.

Tutorial (2 Hours)

Watch Video and Answer Questions

Video 01
01) What are network topologies?
 Network topologies refer to the physical or logical arrangement of devices in a computer
network. They define how devices are interconnected and how data flows between them.

02) What are the basic categories of network topologies?

 Physical Topologies: Define the actual layout of devices and cables.
 Logical Topologies: Define the path data travels logically.

03) Explain the characteristics of star topology.

Star Topology Characteristics:
 All devices are connected to a central hub or switch.
 Hub or switch acts as a central point for communication.
 Easy to install, manage, and troubleshoot.
 Failure of a single connection usually doesn't affect other devices.
 Dependent on central hub's reliability.

04) Explain the characteristics of ring topology.

Ring Topology Characteristics:

Page 1
 Devices are connected in a circular manner.
 Each device is connected to exactly two other devices.
 Data travels in a unidirectional or bidirectional ring.
 Requires a token-passing mechanism for controlled communication.
 Failure of one device can disrupt the entire network.

05) Explain the characteristics of bus topology.

Bus Topology Characteristics:
 All devices are connected to a single central cable (bus).
 Data travels along the bus, and each device listens for its address.
 Simple to install and cost-effective.
 Adding or removing devices can disrupt the network.
 Network performance can degrade with heavy traffic

06)What do we mean by BNC Connector.

A BNC (Bayonet Neill-Councilman) connector is a type of connector used in coaxial cable networks.
It features a bayonet-style locking mechanism for secure connections. BNC connectors are
commonly used in older Ethernet networks and for connecting cable television equipment.

06) Explain the characteristics of mesh topology.

Mesh Topology Characteristics:
 Every device is directly connected to every other device.
 Offers high redundancy and fault tolerance.
 Complex to set up and manage due to numerous connections.
 Suitable for critical applications requiring constant connectivity.
 Scalable and privacy-friendly due to direct communication paths.

07) Explain the characteristics of Ad hoc and infrastructure topologies.

 Ad hoc and Infrastructure Topologies:

 Ad hoc: Temporary, decentralized network formed on-the-fly, such as peer-to-peer

connections. No central device.

Page 2
 Infrastructure: Typical network with centralized components like routers and access points.
Devices communicate through these central components.

Video 02
01) List down the characteristics of RJ-45 connectors.
Characteristics of RJ-45 Connectors:
 Commonly used for Ethernet networking.
 Eight-pin connector with gold-plated contacts.
 UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) or STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cables are terminated with
RJ-45 connectors.
 Used to connect computers, switches, routers, and other networking devices.
 Clips on the connector help secure it in place.

02) What is the difference between RJ-45 connectors and extended RJ-48 connectors?
Difference between RJ-45 and Extended RJ-48 Connectors:
 RJ-45: Standard Ethernet connector for network connections.
 RJ-48: Modified version used for T1/E1 connections. It includes additional pins for signal
grounding and shielding.

03)List down the most popular fiber optic connectors.

Popular Fiber Optic Connectors:
 SC Connector: Square-shaped, push-pull mechanism.
 LC Connector: Small form factor, resembling a mini-SC connector.
 ST Connector: Cylindrical connector with a twist-lock mechanism.
 MTP/MPO Connector: High-density connector for multiple fibers, often used in data centers.
 FC Connector: Screw-on connector used primarily in telecommunications.
