How to replace spark plugs on

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF V

VIDEO TUTORIAL

Important!
This replacement procedure can be used for:
VW CADDY III Box (2KA, 2KH, 2CA, 2CH) 1.6, VW CADDY III Estate (2KB, 2KJ,
2CB, 2CJ) 1.6, VW GOLF V (1K1) 1.6, VW GOLF V Variant (1K5) 1.6, VW JETTA III
(1K2) 1.6, VW TOURAN (1T1, 1T2) 1.6

The steps may slightly vary depending on the car design.

All-purpose cleaning spray Ratchet wrench


High-temperature anti-seize Torque wrench
lubricant Flat Screwdriver
Drive socket # 13 Phillips screwdriver
HEX bit No.H6. Microfibre towel
XZN socket bit # 8 Fender cover
Spark plug socket # 16

The replacement procedure is the same for all spark plugs.

All work should be done with the engine stopped.

CARRY OUT REPLACEMENT IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:

Open the hood.

Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.

Remove the engine cover.

AUTODOC recommends:

Raise the engine cover, holding it on two sides simultaneously.

Unscrew the oil dipstick bracket. Use XZN #8. Use a ratchet wrench.

Remove the oil dipstick.

Unscrew the intake manifold fasteners. Use HEX No.H6. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet
wrench.

Detach the retainers of the ignition cables.

Disconnect the vacuum sensor.

Detach the vacuum pipe.

Unscrew the intake manifold fasteners. Use a Phillips screwdriver.

Remove the intake manifold.

Cover the intake manifold passages with a microfibre towel to prevent dust and dirt from
getting inside.

Remove the spark plug wire connectors from the spark plug wells.

AUTODOC recommends:

Be careful to avoid damaging spark plug wires.

Remember the sequence of the spark plug wires connectors.

Clean dirt, dust and debris from inside the spark plug wells.

Unscrew the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.

Take out the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16.

Apply a thin layer of a special high temperature anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new
spark plugs.

Install the new spark plugs into their mounting seats. Use the spark plug socket #16.

Screw new spark plugs and tighten them. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a torque
wrench. Tighten it to 25 nm torque.

AUTODOC recommends:

Don't tighten the plugs with excessive force. Exceeding tightening


torque can damage the thread connection.

Be careful when working with a spark plug wrench. Its skewing can
cause damage to the threaded connection.

Clean the intake manifold fasteners. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.

Treat the spark plug wire connectors. Use high-temperature grease. Use a flat screwdriver.

Install the spark plug wire connectors into the spark plug wells. Make sure you hear a click
indicating that it is locked in place.

Follow the installation sequence.

Remove the microfibre towel from the intake manifold.

Remove the intake manifold gasket. Use a flat screwdriver.

Install the new intake manifold gasket.

Install the intake manifold.

Tighten the intake manifold fasteners. Use a Phillips screwdriver.

Tighten the intake manifold fasteners. Use HEX No.H6. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet
wrench.

Connect the vacuum sensor.

Attach the vacuum pipe.

Attach the retainers of the ignition cables.

Insert the oil dipstick.

Screw in the oil dipstick bracket. Use XZN #8. Use a ratchet wrench.

Install the engine cover and secure it.

AUTODOC recommends:

Make sure the engine cover is properly seated. It should not be


displaced with respect to the guiding fasteners.

Do not apply excessive force when installing the part. Otherwise you
may damage the fasteners.

Run the engine for a few minutes. This is necessary in order to make sure that the component
operates properly.

Shut off the engine.

Remove the fender protection cover.

Close the hood.
