You are on page 1/ 14

Open google earth

Right Click on My Places → Add → Folder

Give the folder a name say Hubli-Gadag-02. Click OK
In this folder we will be showing the cable route and important way points such as
joints, road cross, enroute villages, Tel Exg etc.
Right click on Hubli-Gadag-02 folder and add a path.
In the new path Dialog Box again give the name as Hubli-Gadag-02 which is the cable
We will be tracing now .
Don’t close the dialog box but drag it to some corner and let it be there until we have
completed our tracing.
Now the mouse clicks are readily recorded as points. So don’t click until the area of
interest is not visible.
Use only the mouse wheel (or the + / - keys on key board) for zooming in /zooming out
and the arrow keys to move around the google earth until the area of interest is in view
Now go on clicking the points to form a line which is our cable path. At any time the
points can be dragged around for adjustment.
By pressing delete the last clicked point will be erased
If you require to add an additional point, first select the point on the right side of which
you wish to add the extra point and the click on the right side to add the extra point.
You can enable the roads and places layer on the layers pane on left to correct
identification.
After the tracing is over click ok on the google earth new path dialog box to save the
data
Now you can see the traced path as a white line (Of course we could have selected a
different color) and an entry ‘Hubli-Gadag-02’ under ‘Hubli-Gadag-02’ folder on the
Places pane on the left.

To change the color of the path right click on the path ‘Hubli-Gadag-02’ and select
properties, select style, color tab and change the color and width
To add way points
Right click on the ‘Hubli-Gadad-02 folder select add→ placemark
A new place mark window will pop up along with the a place mark icon and its current
latitude and longitudes displayed . Notice that by altering the position of the the marker
the lat/ longs change accordingly.
Alternatively if we know the lat /long data with the help of a GPS device, we can type
the lat/ longs in the new place mark window and the marker will position itself
accordingly.
We have added some three place marks for the purpose of illustration and they are available under
the Hubli-gadag-02 folder as DTC Hubli,J1 and J2.

Important Note: JMH’s lat, long is to be entered in OFCNet while creating it.

The Functional unit’s lat, long & the cable’s kml are to be uploaded in GIS. Please check other
GIS help files for how to upload.
Please preserve this FU+Cable+JMH contained kml in your office PC for your future reference.
Next we have created Hubli-Dharwad-01 folder and under this folder draw the cable
and way points viz., Desai cross and canara hotel.
Similarly we can draw for all other routes , each under a separate folder and save.
At any point of time the paths and placemarks can be edited on right clicking and
selecting properties.
Extracting the KML data:
Now we are ready to extract the KML data we have created so far
Right click on any folder say ‘Hubli-Dharwad-01’ and select copy.
Open a new text document on say desk top (right click on the empty area of desktop
→new→text document. Rename it to say Hubli-Dharwad-01.
Open the Hubli-Dharwad-01.txt file and click edit→paste to paste the data
That’s it !
We have got the KML file ready for our use
