Objective:

To determine which food wrapping material provides the best thermal insulation to keep food
warmer over a longer period of time.

Hypothesis:
If food is kept in aluminum foil wrapping, then the food will stay warm for a longer period of

Independent variable: The type of wrapping used for the tacos

Dependent variable: The temperature of the tacos
Constants: The time of day, the location, type of tortilla used

Materials Needed:
● Tacos
● Wax paper
● Aluminum foil
● plastic wrap
● Thermometer
● Timer

Procedure:
1. Obtain tacos and cut wrapping materials into appropriate sizes
2. Wrap each taco with wax paper, aluminum foil, or plastic wrap and ensure each taco is
wrapped securely.
3. Use a thermometer to measure the initial temperature of each wrapped taco.
4. Let the taco rest and check the temperature every 15 minutes for 4 times
5. Observe time
6. Collect data

Background

Thermal insulation is a material used to reduce the transfer of heat between objects or regions
that are at different temperatures. The purpose of thermal insulation is to maintain a consistent
temperature within an enclosed space by preventing heat loss or gain.

Justification:
Aluminum foil is a superior insulator for keeping food warmer due to its high thermal
conductivity, which efficiently reflects and traps heat. It has the ability to wrap itself tightly
around the food or object used and its shiny surface works as reflection of heat causing it to
keep heat inside.

Expected Results:

Aluminum foil is expected to provide the best thermal insulation, followed by wax paper and
then plastic wrap.

Source of Error:
Heat loss due to opening the wrap during temperature measurements.

Limitations:

A limitation could be the quality of the materials.

Precautions:
Avoid coming in contact with extremely hot materials as it can cause burns.

Reflection:
Comparing each wrapping material and knowing which is more effective is crucial because it
provides important information about which material is better suited for preserving food. This
information will come into play in the future when we must decide which material is best to
maintain a warm and nice meal.
