Title: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Deacons)

Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 3:8-13

A short overview of the responsibilities of elders and deacons in the church

1. Elders are decision makers in the church

a. 4 As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance
the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in
Jerusalem. Acts 16:4
2. Elders were ultimately appointed by the Holy Spirit to oversee and take care of the church
members
a. 28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has
made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own
blood. Acts 20:28
b. 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under
compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 1
Peter 5:2
3. Elders are the instrument of the church in praying for the sick
a. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them
pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:14
b. Since they are expected to live a holy and righteous life, they are used by the church to
pray for the sick.

4. Elders are preaching, teaching and praying leaders of the church

a. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:4
b. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-
minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 1 Timothy 3:2

5. The recent responsibilities and functions is specifically related to the spiritual growth and
holiness of the church, which is why in 1 Timothy chapter 3 it is understandable why the Bible
reveals to us that those who aspire such noble task must meet specific qualifications.

6. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will
be judged with greater strictness. James 3:1
a. This is not to lift up elders as elite and high value Christians but rather this is to inform
each and everyone today that church leadership was taken seriously in the Bible.
b. The early church leadership did not merely revolve around who was available but rather
was based who were qualified.
c. The church were looking for men who have are empowered by the Holy Spirit and are
committing themselves to shepherding God’s people, studying God’s word, and living
holy lives.

7. Deacons on the other hand are the servants of the church that are in-charge with
administration and other temporal affairs of the church
a. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right
that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore,
brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of
wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer
and to the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:2-4
b. The apostles/elders understood that the church must prioritize the word of God, but at
the same time balance its physical and other dealings, this is where the deacons balance
the church.
c. They complement the elders in role because they are the one’s assigned to the physical
dealings of the church including giving, financial administration etc.
d. In our modern context today, I believe church staffs, worship leaders, etc. are
functioning as deacons today.
e. Their role is to ensure that the church is served and the elders/pastors can focus on
leading the church through prayer, and the preaching, and teaching of God’s word.
f. The only major differences between elders and deacon qualifications is that deacon
function can be occupied by both men and women and that they are not required to
have the “ability to teach”. Nevertheless, it does not mean it is okay for them to be
ignorant of the Gospel. Like Stephen and Phillip they must be able to have a firm grasp
of the Gospel.
