from the USSR. No one had much hope that the Americans
would win a gold medal, however. Why was that? Well, the
USSR team had won gold medals at six of the previous seven
Olympics, and they were all pros. The US team, on the other
hand, was made up of amateur and college players. Once the
game had started, the USSR team took the lead three times,
with the US team just managing to equalise each time. Then,
in the third period, the US scored a goal that gave them a one-
point lead and, despite some furious attacking from the other
side, managed to hang on to it. In the last moments of the
game, the crowd was counting down the final seconds. The
‘Miracle on Ice’ became one of the Olympics biggest
surprises. Disappointingly for American ice-hockey fans, the
game was not actually broadcast live, but was shown at a later
time on prime-time TV.

The 1976 Australian Open was the last time the competition
was won by an Australian. At the time Mark Edmonson was a
low ranking player with just 11 ranking points, a position
which made it impossible for him to live off playing tennis
professionally, so he had to find employment as hospital
cleaner. His luck changed, however, when Tennis Australia
announced that they did not have enough players for the
Tasmanian Open. Mark entered the tournament and won,
which allowed him to enter the Australian Open as one of the
lowest-ranked players. Ten days later, he defeated the
favourite, John Newcombe, in the final but, instead of
celebrating, immediately caught the tram back to his house in
the Melbourne suburbs. In later interviews, he put his amazing
success down to the fact that he was perfectly familiar with the
way the favourites played, while they had no idea what he was
capable of. Clearly, he knew nothing about his own potential,
either!
