WEEK 1 FOR SS2 FIRST TERM

Date

Class; SS2

Subject; Biology

Theme; Digestive system & mechanism

Unit Topic; Modification of feeding habits

Lesson Topic; Feeding in protozoa, hydra and mammals.

Instructional Objective; At the end of the lesson students should be able to;

 Define digestive system

 State the feeding habits in protozoa
 State the feeding habits in hydra and man
 Define the following term I digestion ii absorption iii assimilation
 Mention some uses of absorbed food

Period; 1st

Time; 1:1:30

Duration: 30minute

Instructional Resources; A chart showing comparative analysis of various elementary canals

2 A chart showing canals feeding habits, ranging from simple animals to complex once like
man

Presentation

Step 1; Identification of prior ideas

Mode; Individual

Teacher’s activities; Teacher asked the students the following question

 What is digestion
 Mention the alimentary canal of man

Step 2; Exploration
Mode; Individual

Teacher’s Activities; Teacher asked the student if they have seen the model of digestive
system

Student Activities; student answered yes

Step 3; Discussion

Mode; Entire class

Teacher’s Activities; Teacher uses the instructional resources to explain the lesson/topic as

Digestion ; It can be defined as the breaking down of large food molecules into
smaller absorbed form

Feeding Mechanism in some animal

1 Absorbing mechanism e.g

Tape worm; It’s an endoparasite which carries out parasitic feeding on hosts. It has no
mouth but absorb digested from their host

1 Alimentary canal is absent than food is absorb in its entire body surface
2 Presence of hooks and suckers which it uses for attachment
3 Presence of thick cuticle which resist digestive enzymes of it host
4 Large body surface area for absorption of already digested food

2 Biting and Chewing Mechanism

e.g grasshopper or cockroach

I Labrum or upper lips; it prevents the food from falling off the mouth

Ii Mamdibles; are jaw like structure used for cutting& chewing

Iii Maxillae; it is a biting, blade it breaks down the food

Iv Labium ; i.e lower lips; It prevent the wastage of food from the mouth.

3 Sucking Mechanism; e.g mosquito housefly and butterfly. Its uses it proboscis for
sucking blood

Ii Stylet capable of penetrating the skin

Iii Labium; is sharp and pointed to ease penetration into the skin
Iv Butterfly; feeds on nectar ; long proboscis

Housefly; possesses enlarged labella used for sucking liquid food

V Sponging; it’s used on liquid food

Labella; aid in rapid absorption of liquid food into the mouth

4 Grinding Mechanism; it chews the food before swallowing due to the presence of hard
and strong teeth made of enamel and dentine

5 Trapping and absorbing mechanism

e.g insectivorous or carnivorous plant such as bladderwort and sun dew

6 Sun dew e.g trap insect by underground nostic movement in respond to touch

Feeding Habits

1 Filter Feeding; It’s also called micro phagous feeders. It feeds on tiny organism which can’t
easily be picked, mainly acquatic organism, using sieve – like structure e.g prawn, mosquito
larva e.t.c

2 Fluid Feeders; its of two types swallows i.e it swallows their food e.g Tape worm

Ii Suckers; This are organism mainly insect which feeds by sucking fluid from plants and
animals e.g bugs, mosquito, butterfly e.t.c

3 Saprophtic feeders; These are non green plants that feeds on dead organic matters e.g
mushroom, mucur, Rhizopoa

Parastic feeding; e.g Tape worm tick, round worm e.t.c

Feeding in protozoa; Amoeba it exhibt holozoic mode of nutrition which feeds on

micro organism e.g diatoms

Feeding in hydra; It feeds mainly in small crusta ceans in other smaller aquatic organism.

Student Activities; Students listens to the lesson attentively and made meaniful
contributions.

Step 4; Application

Mode; Individual

Teachers Activities; Teacher ask the student how is applicable in our daily life activities
Student Activities; Student gave answer to the question above

Step 5; Evaluation

Mode; Individual

Teacher’s Activities; The teacher evaluate the student using instructional objective as follows

 Define digestion
 State and explain the feeding habit of amoeba, earthworm e.t.c
 State the feeding habit in hydra
 Define; @absorption b egestion c assimilation
 Mention 3 uses of absorbed food

Students Activities; Student answers the question orally

Assignment: Draw the diagram of a digestive system of a grasshopper
