Series 3: Discrete Random Variables

Exercise 1. A garage owner rents cars for a day. Let X be the random variable associated with "the number
of requested cars per day" for which the probability distribution function is given by:

xi 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
pi p0 0.15 0.27 0.23 0.16 p5 0.04

1. Calculate p0 and p5 so that pi = P (X = xi ) is actually a probability distribution.

2. Give the cumulative distribution function of X.
3. Determine the probability that the garage owner will receive fewer than three requests in a day.

4. Calculate the average number of cars requested per day.

5. Calculate the standard deviation σX .
6. Assuming that the garage owner has three available cars in the morning, determine the probabilities of
the following events:

a. All cars were rented during the day.

b. The garage owner was unable to satisfy all requests.

Exercise 2. 2 balls are randomly selected from an urn containing 8 white balls bearing the number number
1, 4 black balls bearing the number 2 and 2 red balls bearing the number 0. Let the random variable X be
equal to the sum of the obtained numbers.
1. Determine the probability distribution function of X and plot its cumulative distribution function.

2. Calculate the average sum as well as V (X).

3. Consider the random variable 
0 if X is odd
Y = X
 if X is even
2
a. Determine the probability distribution function of Y .
b. Deduce the expectation of Y .

Exercise 3. Let X be a random variable with the cumulative distribution function given by:

if x < − 13

0

 1 if − 1 ≤ x < 2

FX (x) = 10 8
3
 10

 if 2 ≤ x < 12
1 if x ≥ 12

1. Determine the probability distribution function of the random variable X.

2. Calculate its mathematical expectation and variance.

Exercise 4. An urn contains white and black balls. The proportion of white balls white balls is 1/5 . The
maximum number of draws is 4. We stop as soon as we obtain a white ball, if this occurs before the 4th
draw. Let X be the random variable that counts the number of draws made.
1. Give the domain Ω(X) of the random variable X.

2. Give the p.d.f of X.

3. Determine the cumulative distribution function of X.
4. Calculate the probabilities P (1 < X ≤ 5), P (X ≥ 2) and P (X < 1).
5. Calculate the expectation and standard deviation of X.
