SURFACE ROUGHNESS

1
Surface texture

 Surface – A surface is a boundary that separates an

object from another object

 Surface roughness affects – area of contact, load

bearing characteristics, wear, friction and
lubrication

3
Form error, waviness and roughness

 Form error represents the long wavelength

deviations of a surface from the corresponding
nominal surface.
 Deviations from the desired form can be caused by
many factors. For example: the part being held too
firmly or not firmly enough, inaccuracies of slides
or guideways of machines, stress patterns in the
component
 Form error is the dividing line between geometric
errors and finish errors.

4
Form error, waviness and roughness
Waviness:
Waviness includes the more widely spaced, longer wavelength
deviations of a surface from its nominal shape. Waviness errors
are intermediate in wavelength between roughness and form
error.

Roughness:
Roughness includes the finest, short wave length irregularities of
a surface. Roughness results from a particular production
process or material condition.

Surface measurement lengths

11
Surface measurement lengths

 Traversing length (lt) is the overall length traveled by the

stylus when acquiring the traced profile. It is the sum of pre-
travel, evaluation length ln, and post-travel.
 Cutoff (lc) of a profile filter determines which wavelengths
belong to roughness and which ones to waviness.
 Sampling length (lr) is the reference for roughness
evaluation. Its length is equal to the cutoff wavelength lc.
 Evaluation length (ln) is that part of the traversing length over
which the values of surface parameters are determined.
 The standard roughness evaluation length comprises five
consecutive sampling lengths.

Ra and Rq Parameters

14
Rz and Rmax Parameters
The roughness depth Rz is the mean of five roughness
depths of five successive sample lengths of the roughness
profile.
Rz = 1/5 (Rz1 + Rz2 + Rz3 + Rz4 + Rz5)
The maximum roughness depth Rmax is the largest of
the five individual roughness depths.
Rmax = max(RZ1, RZ2, RZ3, RZ4, RZ5)

15
Rt Parameter
 The Maximum Roughness Depth Rt (peak to valley
height) is the vertical distance between the highest
peak and the lowest valley of the roughness profile R
within the evaluation length L.

16
 Peak roughness – Rp = Height of the highest peak in the
roughness profile over the evaluation length
 Rv = Depth of the deepest valley in the roughness profile
over the evaluation length
 Rt = Total peak to valley height or the vertical distance
between the highest peak and the deepest valley.
