ECO-BRICKING MOVEMENT

Dear Parent

“Sustainability is treating ourselves and our environment as if we are to live on this

earth forever!”

Keeping this insightful perspective in mind, members of AGRANI – the interact club of
Delhi Public School, Greater Faridabad are all geared up to save the ailing planet by
creating ECOBRICKS. An Eco-brick is a reusable building block (consisting of a plastic
bottle densely packed with other used plastic items) that can be used to produce various
items, including furniture, garden walls, community green spaces, and other structures.

Kindly note :

 To make this initiative fruitful, students are required to use an empty plastic bottle
along with other plastic waste items such as Plastic wrappers of processed food
items (chips/toffee/chocolates, etc.); plastic cutlery like forks & spoons; plastic
straws, etc.
Step by Step: How to Make an Ecobrick
1: Collect, Clean, Dry, and Cut Up Plastics. Ensure all your plastics are
completely clean and dry, to avoid bacteria growing inside the bottle. Cutting
everything up is optional, but this will make it much easier for you to pack your
bottle; and you can even (carefully) use a paper shredder for soft, flatter plastics
like bread bags. Remember: Plastics ONLY!
2: Choose Your Bottle. You’ll need a non-crushed PET plastic bottle, with a
secure screw-on top. If you plan to use your eco-bricks to build something,
consider using the same type of bottles —similar shapes will fit better than bottles
of different sizes.
3: Get a Sturdy Stick. This is essential to the Eco bricking process, as this stick will
let you pack down your plastics and fill every ounce of space in your bottle. Just
make sure the stick fits easily into the opening, and that it’s tall enough to push
down to the bottom of the bottle.
4: Start with Soft Plastic. Fill the bottom of your bottle with soft plastic, like a
plastic bag. Soft plastic is best for filling any “legs” or dips on the bottle. Consider
using one solid colour for the entire bottom — this will allow you (or other users)
`

to create fun patterns/designs when building with eco-bricks, making them more
functional in the long run.

5: Pack It Tight: Fill your bottle about halfway with loose plastic, then pack it all
down with your stick, rotating around the bottle. Try to mix layers of soft and
hard plastics, so that your bottle has an even consistency once full. Seriously,
you’ll be amazed at how much you can fit! When the bottle is finally full (but not
so full that the plastic puts pressure on the cap), screw the cap on tightly and make
sure there are no rips or ruptures in the bottle.

 The task must be completed in the month of June, and students are required to
bring their ECOBRICKS to school on July 5, 2024, submitted the same to their
respective class teachers.
 The school plans to create a CHAUPAL in the premises using these ECOBRICKS.
 Ensure that the plastic wrappers are tightly packed, leaving no gaps, to create a
hard, brick-like bottle.
This eco-bricking movement would further encourage our Dipsites, who are the future
denizens, to become more aware and take collective responsibility for their used plastic
by utilizing it to produce a useful product. So, Let’s contribute in making this Earth a
greener and happier place to live!

Looking forward to an enthusiastic participation by our budding environmentalists!
