What is a church ?

CONTENT : The life of the early church.


- The word church means the followers of Jesus Christ throughout the world.
- The word church also means the building in which Christians pray from.
- The word church can also mean a certain group of Christians like
o The Church of Uganda
o The Catholic church
o The Seventh day Adventist church
o The Baptist church
o Tthe above groups of people follow Jesus Christ, they make up the church of
Jesus Christ.
The followers of Jesus Christ started coming together when Jesus began preaching, teaching and
making miracles.
- Before Jesus ascended to heaven he promised his disciples a helper, this helper was Holy
Spirit.
- They needed a helper to give them power and wisdom.
- The day the holy spirit came was the Pentecost day.
- The spirit came and filled the disciples who were in the upper room in the Jerusalem.
- The holy spirit helped believers in the church to have knowledge and the truth about
God.
- After being filled with the holy spirit, the followers started speaking new languages.

Events and activities of the early church.
The early church was the church that existed after the occasion of Jesus into heaven.
A number of events and activities took place in the early church these included:-
 The Pentecost (acts 2: 1-6). It refers to the coming of the Holy spirit to the apostles.
Before Jesus ascended into heaven he promised to send his followers a helper who would
guide and strengthen them.
 He would give them courage, knowledge and truth about God.
 Signs of the coming of the Holy spirit. While the disciples sat together in one place in the
upper room suddenly a noise came from the sky and fell upon them.
 It sounded like blowing wind
 Tongues of fire appeared, spread out and touched each person
 People began to talk in other languages.

The disciples share and there posses as they were one in mind and heart no body among them
lived in, lack, they should all their possessions those who had houses and had sold it and
shared the money among them seen.

Praying – Early believers prayed together, they prayed for the sick, for the suffering and the
dying.

Performing miracles.
- They healed the sick and cast out evil spirits from people.
- They headed the lame

Missionary work
The early church reached different parts of the world through missionary work
A missionary is a person who goes to another country to preach the word of God.

CONTENT : The beginning of missionary work
A missionary is a person who teaches God’s word in a foreign land.
 By making miracles, preaching and baptizing the church grew
 One of the early missionaries was called Phillip
 He left Jerusalem and went to Gaza
 He met an Ethiopian official whom he preached to and converted to Christianity.
The death of St. Stephen
 He spread the word of God. He was a man with God’s power and wisdom.

 Some people never wanted to hear any Good news from Stephen. As a result, he was
arrested. After a false trial, St. Stephen became the first Christian martyr because he died
for his faith in God.

Community life in the early church


 The early church members shared prayers, joy, sorrow and riches together
 They lived as a united body of Jesus Christ.

: Who introduced Islam in Uganda?
Most of the people in Uganda belonged to African Traditional Religion before the coming of
foreign religions. The first foreign religion to be introduced in Uganda was Islam.
 It was introduced by Arabs in Uganda in 1844.
 In 1875, Kabaka Muteesa I requested Henry Morton Stanley to write a letter inviting
missionaries to come to Uganda.
 The first group of missionaries to come was protestants.
 They arrived in 1877.
 They were Rev. CT Wilson and Lieutenant Shergeld Smith
 They were later joined by Rev. Alexander Mackay in 1878. Mackay brought the first
printing press to Uganda.
 In 1879, another group of mission arise came from France.

They were:-
 Rev. Father Simon Lourdel and Brother Amans Delmas.
 They were later joined by Fr. Leo Barbot, Rev. Father Guraunt and Archbishop Lev.

CONTENT : Negative effects of missionary work in Uganda
 They preached against our culture.
 The divided people into Catholics and Protestants church in Uganda.
A martyr is a person who is killed for believing in his or her religion. When missionaries
started preaching, many people got converted to Christianity.
 The Christian converts stopped doing anything which is not of Christian religion.
 The king decided to kill them for disobeying him.
Reasons why Kabaka Mwanga killed the Uganda martyrs.
 They disobeyed his orders
The first martyrs to be killed were Alexander Mackay’s students.
 They were burnt alive at Busega Nateete near Kampala in 1885. They were:-
o Makko Kakumba
o Nuwa Serwanga
o Yusuf Lugalama
Later on more Christians were killed at Namugongo. They were burnt alive at Namugongo in
1886.
 They were burnt by Mukajjanga.
 The total number of Uganda martyrs were 46.
 24 protestants and 22 Catholics

After a few years, the first Anglican Bishop was killed. He was Bishop Hannington.

 He was killed because he used a wrong route to enter Buganda kingdom.
 In 1977, Arch Bishop Janan Luwum was also killed by General Iddi Amin Dada.

INTRODUCTION : The lesson will be introduced by reviewing the previous lesson.
CONTENT : The results of the killing of the Uganda martyrs.
 The courage and faith of Uganda martyrs helped to lay strong foundation of church in
Uganda.
 The Uganda martyrs are remembered on every 3rd day of June.
 This day is a public holiday in Uganda and many Christians go to Namugongo for
prayers.
The killing of the Uganda martyrs enabled the Catholic church to get the first black
Bishop in the whole of Black Africa.
 Because of the Uganda martyrs, Uganda became the first African country to host a pope.
 The pope visited Uganda in 1969 to canonize the Uganda martyrs
 He was the late pope Paul VI.
The story of the Uganda martyrs teaches us the following lessons:-
 Christians suffer and sometimes die for their faith to trust God at all times

 It is clear that man does not live alone
 A voluntary service is a piece of work which one does without any pay.
 A person who does voluntary service is called a volunteer
Examples of free service in the Bible
The story of the good Samaritans
One day, a man travelled from Jerusalem to Jericho. Unfortunately, he was attacked by the
thieves. The thieves removed his clothes, beat him and left him on the roadside nearly dead.
 The first two people did not help the man but just left him lying on the roadside.

Later, a Samaritan came along.
A Samaritan is a person from Samaria
 The Samaritan poured medicine on the wounds of the man.
 He bandaged the man and took him to an inn on his own animal.
 The Samaritan stayed in the inn and looked after the man for the rest of the day.
 The Samaritan paid the gate keeper to look after the man for the rest of the day.
 The Samaritan paid the gatekeeper to look after the man the rest of the days.
 The Samaritan had offered a voluntary service

CONTENT : The story of Samuel
Samuel was a young boy who worked in the temple without pay. He left his parents and worked
in the temple under the leadership of Eli.
 God was happy with Samuel’s work in church. As a result, God helped Samuel to
become a great man. He was a prophet, priest, judge and leader of God’s people.
 The story of Samuel teaches us that we must willingly serve the church before being
asked.

These are organizations which willingly offer free service to people.
These organization which operate within Uganda are called local voluntary Organization.
Others which operate in other countries are called international voluntary organization.

The Uganda Red Cross
The Uganda red Cross society helps in the following ways:-
 It treats soldiers who are wounded in wars
 It gives relief food to refugees and hunger striked people.
 It aids people who are affected by disasters like earthquakes, floods.
 It donates blood
The AIDS support organization (TASO)
 This organization helps people who are suffering from AIDS
 It gives them medical care, counseling services, food and employment.
 It was started by a Ugandan lady called Morine Kaleba.

 It was started by Mrs. Janet Museveni. It helps widows in starting their own business.
UWESO also helps to pay school fees for orphans.

CONTENT : Preparation for prayer
Moslems must make sure that they are clean as much as possible. Through washing the
different body parts, one is free from impurities.
The body parts which must be washed include:-

- Mouth - Ears
- Nose - Feet up to ankle

Organization of congregational prayers


Prayers which are said in the mosque and in a group are called congregational prayers. (Juma
prayers)
 The worshippers must be barefooted during prayer
 The prayers are led by Imaam
 The followers are called Mamuum
Imaam
An Imaam leads prayers in the mosques. He must be an adult male moslem of good character
and standing in the community.
Duties of an Imaam
 Leads moslems in prayers
 Collects alms (zakat)
 Unites moslems with in an area.
 He must be knowledgeable
 Prays for moslems with difficulties
 He organizes the Islamic functions within the area.

When one of the great supporters of Mohammed died, (Abu-Talib) The Meccans started making
attacks on him.
 Mohammed went to another place called Taif.
 He went with his friend said

 He returned to Mecca bleeding
Isra and Miraj
The word Isra means Mohammeds’s night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem
 Miraj was prophet Mohammed’s journey to heaven
 Allah made Mohammed to do that miracle in order to prove to people that he was a
prophet.
