Pythagorean Theorem
For any right-angled triangle where the short sides have lengths a and b and the hypotenuse has length c
the Pythagorean theorem is a ² + b ² = c²: c
a
b
Example: Example:
3² + 4² = c² 5² + b² = 13²
9 + 16 = c² 25 + b² = 169
c 13cm
3cm 25 = c² 5cm b² = 169 – 25 so, b² = 144
√25 = c b = √144
5=c b = 12
4cm b
Use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the lengths of the missing sides.
